🧬🩺 Student Research Spotlight

We’re proud to highlight Tyson Tetoff, a CMU student and corresponding author of a published case report, “Diagnosis and Treatment of Suspected Osteomyelitis in a Complex Patient.”

For Tyson, research is an extension of his passion for medicine; particularly his interest in infectious disease.

In his own words:

“I live, eat, breathe, and constantly think about medicine. I love the learning and new challenges that medicine brings me every day. The research article was done as it was my favorite area of medicine, infectious disease.”

We’re proud to see our students pursuing their interests beyond the classroom and contributing to the medical literature. 📚🔬

We know it’s been a minute 👀 but if we’re quiet, you already know it’s because we’ve been busy behind the scenes. 🩺

And we’re back with a great one.

A couple of months ago, CMU graduates Dr. Amin Eshghabadi and Dr. Loretta Nwangene were part of the Medical ICU team at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Eshghabadi was serving as the ICU Fellow on service, while Dr. Nwangene was working as a PGY-1 Anesthesiology intern.

Two CMU graduates. One medical ICU team. And another reminder that the journey doesn’t stop at graduation. 🩺💙

Saying goodbye to "bye-bye arms" for good. 👋

Three years after lap band surgery and an incredible 90-pound weight loss, this 41-year-old patient came in ready to address the loose skin hanging from her arms, which was hiding all the hard work she'd put into her new body. Dr. Cash performed a brachioplasty (arm lift), removing 531 grams of skin from her right arm and 575 from her left.

Real talk on the tradeoff: an arm lift does leave scarring along the incisions, and she has hers. But she says it was completely worth it! She's more comfortable working out, loves having way more options when it comes to tops, and her scars continue to fade with time.

Happy Parent Appreciation Day! ❤️

Behind every future doctor is someone who believed in them before they believed in themselves.

The parents, guardians, and families who offered encouragement during long nights, celebrated every milestone, and never stopped reminding their student why they started—you are an important part of every success story.

The journey to becoming a physician isn’t one that’s traveled alone. It takes a village, and today we celebrate the people who have been there every step of the way.

To all the parents and families of our students, thank you for your love, your sacrifices, and your unwavering support. We appreciate you today and every day.

Research begins with curiosity and can make a global impact. 🌍🔬

At Caribbean Medical University School of Medicine, we’re proud to celebrate Shivani Shah, whose research has been published in Cureus and featured by Physician’s Weekly.

Reflecting on what inspired the study, Shivani shared:

“During my Family Medicine and Internal Medicine rotations, I noticed a growing trend of patients using GLP-1 medications especially semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide for weight loss, which sparked my interest in researching what happens after these medications are discontinued.”

That observation led to a systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 longitudinal studies, which demonstrated consistent, clinically significant weight regain following cessation of anti-obesity medications, reinforcing obesity as a chronic disease that often requires long-term management.

On having the study recognized, Shivani said:

“Seeing our work featured by Physician’s Weekly was an incredible honor, as they recognized it as one of the first meta-analyses in the incretin era to comprehensively evaluate this important clinical question and highlight its relevance to everyday patient care.”

This is what medical education looks like at CMU; turning clinical experiences into meaningful research that advances patient care and contributes to the global medical community.

At CMU, medicine goes beyond the classroom.

Recently, Caribbean Medical University partnered with the emergency medical helicopter team of curacao_medical_center, allowing emergency helicopters to utilize the CMU landing site when needed.

Healthcare is about putting patients first — always. By cooperating with local emergency medical services, we’re proud to support faster, more efficient care for those who need it most.

This partnership is a reminder that medicine is more than lectures and exams. It’s about community, collaboration, and doing our part to support lifesaving care both on and off campus.
