𝓮𝓷𝓰𝓵𝓲𝓼𝓱 : In January, I received an invitation to participate in a “Climate and Nature Leaders Retreat” called “The Way Out Is In.” The email came from Global Optimism, with at the helm, together with monastics from , the monastery founded by , Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Master, poet, and peace activist.

So in March, I traveled to Yucatán, Mexico, to spend a week surrounded by Buddhist monks and nuns, Christiana and her team, and more than 180 people from across the Americas working toward the well-being of our planet.

I still don’t have the words to fully capture what this experience was. I know it will take time to let it settle, and even more to integrate it.

On the last night, we were invited to share a dance, a song, or any artistic expression. And if you know me, you know: wherever there is art, my inner child shows up.

I chose to sing “Gracias a la vida,” by Violeta Parra, popularized by Mercedes Sosa. When my turn came, I invited the Chileans and Argentinians present to join me… and they did (thank you, Antonieta ♡).

I never imagined that one day I would sing that song, accompanied by a chorus of siblings from both sides of the Andes, in front of monks and nuns from many parts of the world, alongside Christiana Figueres and fellow sustainability practitioners from across the Americas, by the Gulf of Mexico.

I carry many learnings with me, but two stand out:
Teachers are everywhere, and they don’t only come in “official” forms. I arrived thinking I would learn from the monastics, but everyone taught me something. And second, on the spiritual path, you don’t “arrive” anywhere. The walking is constant, probably until the “end”…and perhaps beyond.

Thank you, Global Optimism, for this beautiful opportunity.
Thank you, Christiana, for your strength and vision.
Thank you to the monastics of Plum Village for the humility, dedication, joy, simplicity, and depth.

In the end—and in the beginning: gracias a la vida, que me (da) tanto (Thank you to life, which gives me so much).
