✨ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: CAITLYN DORAN // ✨
Caitlyn Doran
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘭-𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘙𝘢𝘣𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘴
2021
Mixed media on synthetic YUPO paper
“Lazing about, surrounded by the trappings of late-night meals and pauses
in conversation, the real and the unreal subtly mesh into a moment that’s as
valuable to the characters as it is impossible.”
Caitlyn Doran is a painter who honors the small, ordinary things of life; for
her, what is very precious yet in most danger of being overlooked are the
everyday encounters between humans, their animals, their objects, and each
other. Caitlyn remixes these moments in fantastic ways to make for the most
effective form of celebration.
The All-Nighter with Rabbits
is a large-scale painting that showcases a
real gathering, but with a new set of characters. Using acrylic, pastel, and
graphite, Caitlyn plays between the lines of the everyday experience to pull
forward what is often left behind, taking inspiration from her own daily life,
past and present. Loved ones and objects from Kanazawa, Moline, Tokyo, and
Chicago casually occupy the same tatami floor, feeling both as familiar and
intimate as it is dream-like.
❗️See The All-Nighter with Rabbits in all its detail at the Hokin April 14th through April 22nd, 9AM to 7PM❗️
The Hokin Gallery is FREE and Open to the Public. Located at 623 S. Wabash Ave. Chicago IL 60607.

✨ARTIST HIGHLIGHT • Ava Makenali // ✨
𝘚𝘏𝘖𝘛𝘖𝘙
2021
This piece is part of a larger project entitled Shotor (meaning camel in Farsi) inspired by the Persian idiom Kineh Shotori meaning ‘to hold a grudge like a camel.’
“I identify as a camel. While camels have a powerful bite, immense weight, and have killed people, they are not belligerent, murderous, or predatory. I am emotive and meticulous, and I remember everything that affects my heart.
I was an eccentric person interested in makeup, clothing, and art, all things my country, the government and culture strongly rejected, and their beliefs only intensified my feelings of heartbreak and isolation. The camel comes to signify an evil version of myself who takes revenge on those who have wronged her.
The Eastern Evil Ava in consideration of my relationship to Western Civilization. Using the repetitive creation of camels for this project, I ask myself “Am I becoming more like a camel, or is a camel becoming more me?” Through these animals, I playfully confront those who have wronged me and occupy my mind.”

Most of the images of illustrious local burlesque performer Ruby Spencer featured in The Hokin exhibition Provocative Play: The Power of Chicago Burlesque are by Chicago photographer Mike White.
Also known as the artist "ArtBlanche," White creates primarily photographic work in collaboration with a model, incorporating several key themes in his images including the exploration of vulnerability, eroticism, body positivity, and androgyny.
Visually, his style is balanced between two main styles: hard and dark “film noir” style shadows and ethereal lightness with infinite softness.

Several pieces by Chicago photographer Chris Nightengale // are featured in The Hokin exhibition Provocative Play: The Power of Chicago Burlesque.
Nightengale's carefully crafted studio images of burlesque performers in the city showcase each performer's unique and layered visual presentation, with an emphasis on the dramatic and fashionable costumes they make and wear.
These "looks" became part of the performers' "brand;" Nightengale is one example of an artist consistently lending his skills collaborate and make seductive imagery of the burlesque community.
