At the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, our students gain a global perspective on nursing.
This spring, juniors in our Community Health Nursing course spent two weeks in England learning about the country’s health care system firsthand. They visited community-based hospitals, accompanied National Health Service (NHS) district nurses on home visits, and learned about community-based pediatric and hospice care.
Students also explored the foundations of public health through sites connected to nurse Florence Nightingale and John Snow, a physician and founder of the study of epidemiology.

Congratulations to Leah McClellan and Margaret Delaney, recipients of a Schreiber Venture Fund grant from Loyola to launch their new project, Roots to Recovery!
Starting this summer, Loyola Nursing community health students and interns will partner with the Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center (ANB) in East Garfield Park to revitalize ANB’s community garden. They'll also offer workshops in gardening and nutrition to ANB participants.
Roots to Recovery is an opportunity to study neighborhood-level factors related to food access and gain a better understanding of the complex social issues related to nutrition and food security. Interns from the School of Environmental Sustainability will also be part of the Roots to Recovery team.
ANB is our longtime academic partner and we’re excited to expand our collaboration with them!

Greetings from France! Loyola Nursing students are taking part this week in our annual service immersion to Lourdes, assisting pilgrims who come to the famous Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in search of miracles and healing.
Lourdes is one of the holiest sites in Catholicism, and the immersion helps our nursing students learn to care for the spirit - putting our Jesuit value of cura personalis, or care for the whole person, into action.
This year, several of our students were chosen to present gifts during an international Mass. They also ran into a pilgrimage group from Loyola University Maryland, one of our sister Jesuit universities!

“Nursing as a profession has a duty to advocate for better education and better consent around end-of-life decisions. We are one of the most trusted professions, and we are the ones at the bedside more than any other discipline in the hospital.”
Fabiola Magaña is a PhD candidate at the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing who studies end-of-life experiences among Latino communities.
Her goal is to help patients and families better understand their options and communicate their wishes at the end of life.
Fabiola's work exemplifies Loyola’s Jesuit commitment to cura personalis, or care for the whole person, at all stages of life. Learn more at https://bit.ly/4uCK74R

“As prospective students consider Loyola (Nursing) for their graduate work, they say, ‘Wow, Loyola has this person that helps you find your project and helps guide you through the entire project experience.’ That’s a plus."
