“We are currently living in scary times, especially considering the developments that followed the Second World War. This era saw the creation of important tools like human rights, international law, and the Geneva Conventions, all aimed at preventing the kind of destruction Europe experienced during both World Wars. However, all these achievements are now threatened by the rise of populism that we see around us.” - Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb

In a thought-provoking reflection, Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb addresses the urgent need for a theological reevaluation in the wake of contemporary crises, particularly in Gaza. He highlights the dangerous intersection of divine rights and human rights violations, exemplified by the justifications for violence found within religious texts. Raheb emphasizes that all Abrahamic faiths contain multiple interpretations, revealing more about humanity than about the scriptures themselves. He calls for a collective repentance among theologians—both Christian and Jewish—recognizing the harmful narratives that have demonized Arabs and Muslims. Drawing parallels with the post-Holocaust changes in Christian theology, he asserts that the urgency of a new theology after Gaza is crucial to restoring lost faith in humanity.

For a deeper understanding of these important topics, we encourage everyone to watch the video of Rev. Dr. Raheb's powerful message.

In a world increasingly dominated by technology and instant communication, the value of artistic education often gets overshadowed. However, institutions like Dar al-Kalima University, the first and only university of arts, culture, and design in all of Palestine, play a vital role in ensuring that the transformative power of artistic education is recognized and nurtured. When young people engage in singing, playing an instrument, dancing, or creating art, they are not just learning a skill; they are receiving a lifelong gift. Artistic education cultivates avenues for self-expression, fosters deep connections, and provides comfort in times of need.

At Dar al-Kalima University, students are encouraged to explore their creativity and develop their unique voices—both literally and figuratively. The process of mastering an art form instills confidence and a sense of accomplishment that can extend to various aspects of life. In a region rich with cultural heritage yet challenged by conflict, the university serves as a beacon of hope and expression for aspiring artists, helping them harness their talent while contributing to the preservation and evolution of Palestinian culture.

Artistic pursuits at Dar al-Kalima University bring people together. Whether performing within a choir, participating in a dance ensemble, or collaborating on innovative art projects, students build connections within their communities. These experiences nurture teamwork, empathy, and understanding—skills essential for navigating personal and professional relationships later in life.

Art also serves as a source of comfort and healing. At Dar al-Kalima, engaging in creative activities allows students to process their feelings, relieve stress, and find solace during challenging times. The university understands that art has a unique ability to communicate what may be difficult to articulate with words, offering an emotional outlet that promotes mental well-being.

By fostering a greater understanding of the significance of artistic education, Bright Stars of Bethlehem plays an essential role in advocating for the resources and recognition that this university needs to thrive. Supporting artistic development is not merely an investment in individual talent; it is a commitment to empowering the next generation of Palestinian youth to be expressive, connected, and resilient individuals in a complex world.

Hope is what we do.

"I want to bring attention to the dire situation in the West Bank, particularly in Bethlehem. Currently, a staggering 86% of our land is under Israeli control, whether through military presence or settlers. This leaves us with only 14% of the land under our own control. The city is encircled by 54 checkpoints, which can be closed at Israel’s discretion, effectively trapping the residents. Just last week, there were three days when access in and out of Bethlehem was completely sealed off.

The conditions we are witnessing in the West Bank are now beginning to mirror those in Gaza, albeit on a smaller scale. Sadly, the ongoing suffering of our people, from the genocide in Gaza to the settler colonial practices in the West Bank, remains largely unreported in the news.

Freedom of movement has become increasingly challenging, impacting our students and professors significantly. For instance, students from Tulkarem faced a heartbreaking experience just three months ago when their aunt passed away about 70 miles from Bethlehem. They attempted to attend the funeral but endured a grueling nine-hour journey, only to arrive after the service had concluded.

This situation raises serious concerns about the impact on our young people. For our professors as well, traveling from places like Ramallah to Bethlehem has become an arduous challenge. Israel routinely closes all main roads for Palestinians, except on Saturdays, making commutes increasingly difficult. The primary route between Ramallah and Bethlehem is inaccessible from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM daily, leaving it open only to Jewish individuals." - Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb

Today marks a significant achievement for Dar al-Kalima University graduate, Rani, who has successfully completed the discussion of his Master's thesis in Contemporary Arts, titled “Prospects of Employing Place and Memory in the Industry of Alternative Art Exhibitions in Palestine - Exhibition (Appearance and Disappearance).” With the guidance of a dedicated panel comprising Dr. Inas Deeb as the supervisor and chairperson, along with internal examiner Dr. Ehab Bessaiso and external examiner Dr. Muhammad Jabbar, Rani’s journey in academia has culminated in a groundbreaking exploration of art’s relationship with collective memory.

Rani’s thesis extends beyond traditional academic inquiry; it represents a thoughtful examination of how art can reframe our understanding of place and memory, particularly in the context of Palestine. A key aspect of his research involved the innovative exhibition entitled "Appearance and Disappearance," which took place inside a natural cave in the outskirts of Rama, Hebron. This unique venue was not merely an exhibition space; it transformed into a sensory and spatial experience that challenged conventional perceptions of art. Through this installation, Rani invited visitors to reconsider the cave as an artistic and spiritual site, rich with layers of Palestinian memory often overlooked or forgotten.

Reflecting on this profound experience, Rani dedicates his success to the spirit of his beloved grandmother, Samiha Sherbati, who instilled in him the values of love, steadfastness, and faith in his pursuits. He emphasizes the importance of the support network that surrounded him throughout this journey. Rani extends his heartfelt gratitude to his family, especially his wife Rahaf, whose unwavering encouragement has been a pillar of strength.

He also acknowledges the contributions of his professors, colleagues, and friends from Dar al-Kalima University, as well as his dear friend Izz Al-Jabari, whose collaboration enriched the exhibition and experience. Rani highlights that this achievement is not solely his; it belongs to everyone who believed in him and opened doors along his path.

Congratulations, Rani!

On the morning of a day that Raneem had dreamt of for years, she prepared to face the Student Exchange Committee, feeling the weight of her aspirations. Despite her dreams of breaking boundaries in the fashion world, the reality of her life in Deir al-Ghusun, a village north of Tulkarm, cast a dark shadow over her ambitions. In the days leading up to her important interview, her village experienced a harrowing three-day raid that left deep scars on both its landscape and its people.

The violent incursions brought with them bomb explosions, night raids, arrests, and the barricading of village entrances, effectively transforming her home into a prison without doors. The violence and chaos forced families to flee their homes, while soldiers took over properties, displacing hundreds of residents. Raneem's life, like many others, came to a standstill; the basic necessities of life—food, security, and peace—became fleeting memories.

The ongoing crisis in Palestine, particularly in the West Bank and Gaza, highlights the conflict and the humanitarian struggles faced by civilians. Recently, the West Bank has experienced heightened tensions due to increased lockdowns and violence. Israeli security operations, framed as counter-terrorism measures, have created confrontations with Palestinian residents, leading to casualties on both sides. These operations are often aimed at apprehending individuals suspected of planning attacks or engaging in militant activities, but they perpetuate a cycle of unrest and suffering.

In Gaza, the humanitarian situation has reached alarming levels due to blockades and restrictions that severely limit access to essential goods and services. Residents are grappling with insufficient clean water, healthcare, and food, leading to dire living conditions. Despite international calls for increased aid and relief, the political complexities and ongoing hostilities hinder effective support delivery.

In light of these circumstances, Martin Luther King Jr.'s poignant reflections on violence and its consequences resonate deeply. He asserted that "Violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problem; it merely creates new and more complicated ones. Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys the community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers." The violence currently observed in Palestine, whether through military operations or retaliatory actions, does not pave the way for resolution but instead deepens divisions and suffering.

As the world observes the plight of Palestinians, it is imperative to seek solutions rooted in compassion, understanding, and dialogue. Only then can the cycle of violence be broken, leading to a future where justice and peace prevail.

"If you are a child in Gaza born in 2007, your life has been profoundly affected by conflict. When you were just two years old, you experienced the first assault. At four, you faced the second. By the time you were seven, there was a third assault. As a teenager at 14, you endured the fourth, and then the fifth when you were 15. Now, you are witnessing the ongoing genocide, marking the sixth war in your life as a child.

People often talk about post-traumatic stress, but in Gaza, we are never in a post-trauma era; this trauma is ongoing and continues to affect us each day." - Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb
