New Staff Alert 💙💙 Mrs. Karen Nelson joins our St. Philip staff as our 1st/2nd grade teacher! From her earliest days, she says she always knew she wanted to be a teacher. Growing up, her favorite thing was playing school; 25 years in—it’s still her absolute favorite thing. Specifically, she loves building routines and connections within her classroom, complete with shared language, fun, and vocabulary. Phonics are in everything she does in the classroom. Even math has phonics lessons hidden in the numbers! Connecting the dots across subjects and into real life is what education is all about for her.

All 25 of her teaching years have been in private, Christian schools because she loves to be able to share Jesus with her students. Mrs. Nelson earned her bachelors in Child Development and Master’s in Elementary Education. “I love the craft of teaching,” she says, “and you’ll rarely find a pre-made poster in my room.” She loves to get her students invested in their own learning even down to making instructional posters!

When she is not in the classroom, you can find Mrs. Nelson playing tennis or reading, walking with husband Erik and their pup, visiting Disneyworld or crafting a very involved costume. She hopes to start an afterschool reading club in the winter, so stay tuned for more info. Welcome to the St. Philip Lutheran family, Mrs. Nelson!

Join us in raising funds during our annual Walk-a-thon! This year, we are seeking to fund supportive materials from our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, Friendzy. Beyond learning the core subjects and our Christ-centered Christian curriculum, St. Philip students learn how to say they are sorry (and mean it), that our words have weight, and ultimately how to make friends for life. BIG stuff! Please consider making a donation of any size to help us get to our goal of $5,000!

Donate here: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/SPL2026
(A note for families: if you are looking to make a donation toward a particular student's goal, find that student by their family name and donate to their pledge page! Otherwise, you're welcome to make a donation to the general fund! Thanks!!)

Continuing on our intros of our new staff members, give a warm welcome to Mrs. Stephanie Lane-Baker! 💙💙 Stephanie joins us as our Pre-K/Kindergarten teacher. Her vibrant and varied teaching experience spans almost 40 years; in that time, she has earned her bachelors and two Master's degrees (and has considered a doctorate many times). To say she loves learning is an understatement. Spending any time with her and her class, you'll quickly see that she sees an opportunity to learn in every little moment.

Her teaching is grounded in a play and project-based approach through literacy, STEM, music and movement; she says "you never know what your students will be curious about," so she often allows her students' desire for understanding lead the way. Once, a student was curious about how cloth is made because of a loose thread on his pants. This lead to an entire unit on cloth making from cotton plants to final production, the historical and cultural impact of clothing, and eventually the students made their own quilt together as a class alongside aunties and grandmas!

She's the recipient of the Evanston ECE Award and the coveted Cole McCormick Award. About teaching she says "curriculum is critical but relationships are the key." Stephanie takes her role as an educator so seriously as she believes she becomes part of each students' family, a high honor for her. When she's not in the classroom, she enjoys just about everything from cooking, culture, art and music to genealogy and camping. Welcome to St. Philip, Mrs. Lane-Baker!

Our Preschool - 4th grader students field-tripped it out to Wagner Farm recently for an all things farm experience! Our littlest students got to experience the farm through their five senses—smelling, touching, tasting, listening and seeing so many new things. Our 1st-4th graders pitched in on some good old fashioned farm chores like laundry, feeding animals, and churning butter! These city kids had the best time and lots of stories to tell. Thanks for having us, !

Could there be a better way to spend the day than petting a Lutheran Church Charities Comfort Dog?? We don’t think so! Grace, a hard working LCC Comfort Dog (and her handler!), joined us for chapel and some comfort time today. Each of our classes got some devoted time with sweet Grace and got to ask their burning questions! Our students were very curious about how a dog becomes a Comfort Dog (lots of training!), why she must wear a vest (it helps her know she is at work!), and what she does for fun (all the usual fun dog things!).

This quarter, our chapel offering collection go directly to the comfort dog program at LCC! Thanks for supporting their efforts with us!

Thanks for spending the morning with us, Grace! You’re welcome back anytime 💙
