š¹ Can you learn piano in JUST ONE WEEK? š¹
Now thatās a daunting task. But the kids I teach at Girls Rock! Chicago take that exact challenge and put it to the test.
This marks my 4th year teaching for Girls Rock! Chicago, a non-profit youth music summer camp encouraging self-expression and personal growth through music.
In (only) 1 week, these kids learn an instrument, form a band, write an original song, record it and perform it!
Itās a whirlwind of excitement where kids become total rock stars for the week and the energy that staff and students bring is unmatched. This year camp is Virtual on Zoom and Iāve still been feeling the energy -- even from my home studio.
Girls Rock! Chicago is where I found my love for teaching that I now get to do as a career via my piano studio, Marilyn Metz Music.
I teach in-home 1-on-1 piano lessons for kids (generally ages 5-12) at beginner/intermediate levels, laying the groundwork for a lifelong enjoyment of music.

Is your kid interested in learning piano? I teach 1-on-1 piano lessons at beginner to intermediate levels to set a foundation of music skills that your child can grow to use however they want to in life.
Whether they grow to want to be a professional musician or want to play the new Taylor Swift song on the radio, I'm here to help set that foundation.

Question: Have you ever tried something new, didnāt nail it the first time, and instantly decided, āWell, this just must not be for me.ā
I know I have.
And Iāve seen my piano students go through this, too. Itās frustrating to not nail that new scale or new song right away!
Hereās the good news: Itās NORMAL to not be good at something right away.
You can even find comfort in knowing, āHey, youāre NOT supposed to be a master of this right now.ā Plus, when you make progress, itās SO rewarding to look back on all the hard work that paid off.
When youāre learning a new skill, keep this quote from Jim Edwards in mind:
āThe way to get good at something fast is you have to try. Then once you try, you have to be bad, and then you can be good, and then you can be great. The only way to be great is first to be good. The only way to be good is first to be bad. And the only way to be bad is first to try.ā

LET'S BE HONEST: Learning piano can be scary!
Itās a very personal experience.
You have to accept challenges, take risks and showcase imperfections - all for the sake of learning.
And thatās scary! Especially for a kid.
Thatās why effective music learning requires a level of trust, support, and guidance -- all in a safe environment.
When I was in 4th Grade, my loving Mama enrolled me in 1-on-1 piano lessons! HOWEVERā¦ I was SO shy.
I was that kid who was too afraid to even speak during lessons and kept my eyes down at the keys the whole time, praying for my 30 minutes to end. And when Teacher asked me a question, I was mortified when I didnāt know the answer.
The odd thing was, I took other 1-on-1 music lessons for Voice and Viola and had NO problem coming out of my shell. No shyness. I even looked forward to those lessons!
So, what was different?
***THE ENVIRONMENT THE TEACHER CREATED***
You could say my 4th grade piano teacher wasnāt the most warm, welcoming personā¦ He taught just fine. I learned just fine. But I was too scared & uncomfortable during lessons to enjoy myself, the music or make fast progress.
I try to remember this experience when working with all of my students. Learning music can be overwhelming and thatās normal! Your kid deserves a learning experience where they can make a mistake, feel comfortable asking about it and get excited about learning. After all, music is supposed to be fun!
