Happy New (Academic) Year, CoE Blue Demons!! What a wonderful start to our year!

08/12/2024

To our alumni as you're about to commence the new school year, words from a fellow teacher that we hope might resonate. Not only are you enough, the work you do can make a world of difference to each and every student in your classroom. ❤️

"May you find the people who will sustain you and remind you that this work matters. May you delight in your students—their brilliance and their quirks. May you find the good in your day, tuck it into your heart, and work to replicate it. May you always know: you are enough."

A look back at the joyful commencement ceremony of our 2024 graduates here in the College of Education.

Exciting times ahead for new teachers in PK-12 classrooms this fall and for our own students in our classrooms in the new academic year this September. Until then, we hope everyone—from our brand-new alumni, to our current and incoming students, to faculty and staff, all have a restful, fun and safe summer.

College of Education Class of 2024: A final reminder of important instructions as you prepare to participate in our college’s commencement ceremony this Saturday, June 15 at 1 p.m. at Wintrust Arena.

Graduates must arrive at 12 p.m. (noon)
Doors open for guests at 12 p.m.(noon)

Please plan to arrive in your cap and gown at the Wintrust Arena when the doors open at noon! Remember also to bring with you the reader card you picked up at the Commencement Kick-off event!

You will enter through the Wintrust loading dock, located at the corner of 21st Street and Indiana Avenue. Guests enter through main doors and are not allowed on the dock. Before entering the Arena, you will pass through a metal detector, per Wintrust’s security protocol. From the dock, you will be directed by staff marshals to the appropriate designed seating on the Arena floor.

Plan to arrive an hour before your ceremony. Expect lines so plan accordingly.

You must be seated in the arena 15 minutes before the ceremony’s scheduled start.

Arrive dressed in your regalia. There will not be designated areas to dress at the venue. The tassel on your cap should hang to the right. Do not lose your hood (if applicable), cap, tassel or reader card.

We encourage you to wear comfortable shoes, to arrive hydrated and to limit personal belongings. Do not bring unnecessary valuables with you. Use the cell phone pouch the College provided to you or another similar item. You cannot have anything in hand as you cross the stage, and you will not return to the same seat as you started.

Wintrust Arena’s Bag and Purse Policy
Wintrust Arena adheres to strict safety procedures that are enforced without exception. Everyone entering the arena will pass through a metal detector and security check. In addition, graduates and their guests should become familiar ahead of time with the arena’s strict bag and purse policy that prohibits most purses and bags. Please take note of other prohibited items indicated below including posters, banners and noisemakers.

https://resources.depaul.edu/commencement/wintrust-arena/Pages/Wintrust-Bag-Policy.aspx

What to Expect During the Ceremony
You will be seated in the arena by the degree you’re receiving. (The dot on your reader card corresponds with your assigned ceremony seating area.)

COE marshals will direct you to the stage when it is time for the announcement of degrees. Remember to bring the reader card with you to the stage.

A marshal on stage will keep the pace and motion for you to go. Hand the reader card to the marshal and start walking only when they motion you forward. This short video will help you prepare.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vF_ZFlPL3ho

A photographer at the bottom of the stairs will take a photo of you holding the diploma cover that was handed to you. You will not receive your diploma at the ceremony, but rather a diploma cover. For students who have conferred, your diploma should have arrived at your diploma address provided in Campus Connect. If you have yet to officially graduate, your diploma will be mailed following the conferral of your degree.

Following the photo, you will be directed to return to your seat. At the end of the ceremony, graduates will process to the exit behind the stage – back to the dock. You will exit on to Indiana near 21st Street and can walk one block south to the front of the arena to greet your guests near the main entrance.

The length of the commencement program is approximately 2 – 2.5 hours. Out for respect for your fellow graduates, please stay for the entire ceremony. Your show of support will help make the occasion memorable for all—from the first student who crosses the stage to the last.

Parking and Transportation
Paid parking in the area is highly limited, so we encourage you and your guests to use public transportation or taxi/ride share options. Wintrust Arena is accessible by city bus and elevated train. Please visit the Wintrust Arena website to learn more.

https://www.wintrustarena.com/plan-your-visit/transportation/

Several parking options are available. Please be aware that we expect Lot A to reach capacity quickly. With six ceremonies occurring over two days, traffic in the area may be heavy when guests from one ceremony are exiting parking areas while guests for the next ceremony are arriving.

Guest Information
General admission tickets are required. Guests are seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Lost tickets cannot be replaced. A limited number of unclaimed tickets may be available at the Wintrust Box Office an hour before the ceremony.

Wheelchair seating areas are available at commencement ceremonies. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

For family and friends who are unable to attend your commencement in person, a livestream will be available when the ceremony begins.

EDUCATING FOR DEMOCRACY IN A CONTENTIOUS ELECTION YEAR

THURSDAY, MAY 9th, 5:30 TO 7 p.m. (CST)

A US national election is unfolding in the midst of rapidly increasing political polarization. Many Americans think democracy is at risk. For others, beliefs about the importance of democracy and trust in the government are at all-time lows.

This contentious election year provides an opportunity to explore questions such as:

What does it mean to educate for democracy? To prepare students to be informed and engaged citizens? What can that look like in middle and high school classes? In elementary grades? Across subject matter? In different communities with divergent values, norms, and school cultures? How can educators develop a civic culture in the classroom and school? Encourage discussion of controversial issues? What are the questions and ethical issues confronting educators as they prepare for these discussions?

This discussion on the difficulty and great need to teach bilingual instruction speaks directly to our pedological mission here in our Leadership, Language & Curriculum program in COE, where we have degree work in bilingual education, ESL and more at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Our students and those interested in teaching in bilingual and ESL classrooms should find the research and findings discussed here, including by LAS's Prof. Lourdes Torres (Latin American and Latino Studies), to be thought provoking.
