Do you speak more than one language? Have you ever noticed how your voice, your thoughts, or even your sense of self seems to shift when you move from one language to another?

This poem by Samantha Lao explores that quiet transformation—the feeling of becoming someone slightly different as words change and new languages take shape.

Samantha is pursuing a master’s degree in linguistics and creative writing. A speaker of English and Spanish, she took the accelerated “Portuguese for Spanish Speakers” course (PORT 122) at the University of Chicago, where she continues to deepen her relationship with Portuguese and the worlds it opens.

What makes the identity of some peoples? Is it their geography, their background, the original inhabitants of their lands, their history? Should this identity be the same forever or should we revisit our identity?

Those were some of the discussions carried out in the course SPAN 20402 - curso de redacción académica para hablantes nativos.

Read this piece by Jiara Luna in which she discusses the idea of “mestizaje” in Mexico based on the readings and discussions from this course.
