What happens when a child opens a book for the first time? It looks ordinary. A page turns. A word is sounded out. A character appears from somewhere far away, or a story that feels strangely like their own.
Then something shifts. They start asking questions. Why did that happen? What would I do? Why is the world this way? Could I change it?
That is literacy. Not just reading the words on a page, but making meaning of the world around them. A literate child begins to understand people, cultures, and stories beyond their own. They learn to question what they’re told, and to express what they believe, imagine, and hope for.
And slowly, something bigger happens: they start to see themselves as someone whose voice matters.
Yet for millions of children, that first book never comes. A missing book can seem small. But sometimes a book starts a question. A question becomes an idea. An idea becomes confidence. And confidence gives a child the courage to imagine a different future.
