Derrick’s enthusiasm for networking and supporting the next generation of leaders has only grown during his time with us. As a senior at NLCP, Derrick was an integral member of the Peace Warriors. His commitment to MLK’s principle of “Accept Suffering without retaliation for the sake of a cause to achieve the goal” has guided him through his college journey. We’re excited to share some fantastic news! At NLCP, supporting our scholars' interests has always been a priority. With a recent grant from Whole Kids, the philanthropic arm of Whole Foods, we’re expanding our efforts to include urban gardening. This grant will enable our scholars to learn about growing their own food and create a deeper connection to what they eat. We can’t wait to roll out this new garden space and its associated programs at our Christiana Campus. Thank you, Whole Kids, for helping us grow! 🌻🍅

📢 On Wednesday, August 14th, 2024, charter school parents, students, alumni, and staff rallied outside the Chicago Board of Education agenda review meeting to share their concerns.

In December, the Chicago Board of Education announced an intent to prioritize traditional neighborhood schools, leading many to believe that district selective enrollment, magnet schools, and charters would become less prominent in CPS’s plans. Recent charter renewals have been shorter, prompting charter leaders to seek clarity on their future within CPS's strategic plan.

Kobey Lofton, behavior specialist at North Lawndale College Prep and an alumnus, led a chant during the rally, emphasizing the importance of charter schools in Chicago’s educational landscape.

🎓 Meet Sarah Shannon, a current paraprofessional and proud alumna from NLCP’s Class of 2006!

Sarah’s favorite part of NLCP has always been the family atmosphere, where she has felt appreciated and supported both as a student and now as a staff member. She truly embodies NLCP's vision of creating transformational leaders who positively impact their communities.

As an alumna, Sarah is actively working in the North Lawndale community to support students just like her, helping them achieve their dreams and post-secondary success. Currently, she’s working on obtaining her Master’s in Special Education to continue serving the needs of NLCP scholars.

We couldn’t be prouder of Sarah and her commitment to making a difference! 🌟

🎉 We’re thrilled to announce that both NLCP campuses, Christiana and Collins, have been selected for the Communities In Schools (CIS) Intensive program!

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Chicago is the leading nonprofit in the city, dedicated to removing barriers so students can unlock their potential and stay on the path to graduation. With this incredible partnership, NLCP will be able to provide even more social and emotional support for our scholars.

Student Supports Managers will be housed at each campus four days a week, offering individual and group support to students who are off-track in their attendance, behavior, and grades. They will also connect us to valuable community resources and programs.

We’re so excited to have this partnership and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our students! 💼🎓

Proud of our students for volunteering through several service projects, tending to a community garden, beautifying the neighborhood with a colorful mural, and handing out free brown bag lunches for the neighborhood and the unhoused.

Due to inclement weather, NLCP will be in alignment with CPS and will be closed tomorrow, for the safety of our students and staff. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. As we take time to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. today, it is important for us to reflect on the significance of this day and why we honor the legacy of Dr. King. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the pursuit of equality, justice, and civil rights for all. His tireless efforts continue to inspire us, and on this day, we remember and honor his contributions to creating a more just and equitable society.

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, NLCP would like to express gratitude for the values and principles Dr. King stood for. We encourage you to take a moment to reflect on his teachings and the impact they have on our community and beyond.

Lets give a warm welcome to our new Christiana campus Case Manager! Milicia has a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and Master of Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University. She has experience serving as a Special education teacher and paraprofessional in Charter and Chicago Public Schools. Milicia says that her sole motivation is to serve diverse learners and be an advocate for families and students to strive for excellence every day, together. Welcome to the Phoenix Family Milicia!

We are excited to welcome Takeida Howze, an NLCP alumn, to the team as our Network Public Ally! She will be assisting with various leadership projects within the network department of NLCP, and North Lawndale community. Once finished with the program, Takeida will have narrowed her focus to finish a B.S of Integrative Studies with an emphasis in social justice and welfare from Grand Valley State University. Welcome back Takeida!
