At Al Nahda School in Daret Ezzeh in Aleppo, these girls spent the summer learning photography, coding, and laser cutting. By the final day, they were showing their families projects they had imagined and made themselves.

This is what we want school to make possible. But before any of it can happen, the basics need to be there: working lights, safe desks, clean bathrooms, and classrooms that are ready for students.

Through our Back to School campaign, we’re preparing schools for thousands of students returning this fall. The first day is getting closer, and we still have work to finish.

That means getting classrooms ready, restoring water and bathrooms, fixing lighting, providing heat, and helping schools stay powered.

Earlier this summer, artwork created by young people in Karam Studios was shown at London’s Southbank Centre during Meltdown Festival, curating this year by Harry Styles.

The pieces were part of an immersive installation created for Refugee Week, bringing together art around the theme of courage. The installation was paired with an original score by Jon Hopkins inspired by the pieces themselves. We’re so proud to see Karam’s young artists share their work with audiences in London, and grateful to Choose Love for making it possible.

Fourteen years later, the story is still being written.

Syrian families are not starting from nothing. They are starting from everything they carried with them: skills, ideas, memory, love, and the will to build again.

This World Refugee Day, Karam is entering a new chapter in Syria, bringing Beit Karam home and building alongside youth and families, one school, one studio, one community at a time.
