For those joining the Day of Service event tomorrow here are a few reminders!

Time: 8:45am-1:150m

Shift description: You will be assisting with our outdoor food distribution. You may be packing carts of food, bringing food outside to clients, packing bags, or stocking shelves. Please dress for the weather as many roles take place outside.

Where do I come for my volunteer shift?

Care for Real Edgewater - 5339 N Sheridan

When you are facing the building, you will see a driveway on the left (north) side of the building. Walk this driveway to the back of the building and come in through the gray double doors marked Care for Real.

What do I need to know for my first shift?

When you arrive, be sure to let someone know you are there for a group shift. They will help you get a nametag. If you need a locker, please ask for one. We ask volunteers to limit what they bring with them (especially valuables), as locker space is limited.

Please wear a mask a properly fitting mask, comfortable clothing that you can bend and lift in, and closed-toe shoes. You may be volunteering outside so please plan to dress for the weather.

Feel free to bring your own bottled water, coffee, or whatever you like to have along with you. We also have beverages and snacks available. If you'd like to bring a lunch with you for days when you are serving a longer shift, feel free to put your lunch in the volunteer fridge. Ask a staff member if you are not sure where this is.

All training will take place during your first shift.

Where can I park?

There is, unfortunately, no parking available at our sites. Do not park behind the Edgewater location. Street parking is available at both locations are easily accessible via CTA.

There are bike racks in front of our Edgewater location as well as inside the entrance to the Breakers parking garage, which can be accessed via the driveway in the center of our building. We do not have bike racks at our Rogers Park location, so please bring your bike inside and someone can show you the room we store bikes in.

If interested, we will head to Burke's Public House after for a lunch together!

A big thanks to the all the alums that participated in the Benedictine Day of Service at the Greater Chicago Food Depository and to those that made contributions to our virtual fundraiser so the GCFD could buy food. The volunteers, spanning 41 years from youngest graduating class to oldest class, packed up 10,549 pounds of apples! And the fundraiser will deliver 3,247 meals to our fellow Chicagoans in desperate need of food. You all made a great difference in the lives of so many.
Great job Chicago CSB / SJU Alums!!! Looking to make this an annual event! Keep a lookout on this page for additional pics and videos to follow!

The Night That John Prine Died 04/22/2021

SJU Alum, pays tribute to Chicago’s very own John Prine. Check out the link below where John McCutcheon class of ‘74 sings poetic about one of Chicago’s favorite sons —-John Prine.
Listen closely to the beginning where John references his friend Richard, a fellow Johnnie who happens to be an artist himself!

The Night That John Prine Died I wrote this almost immediately upon hearing the news about John Prine's death. We'd spent a number of memorable evenings together, both on and off stage. ...
