Charles Gates Dawes Elementary School

Yesterday, our 5th grade students showcased their creativity and voice through original compositions including musical pieces, spoken word performances, lyrical writing, and hybrid presentations.

Each piece reflected their understanding of prejudice, injustice, and the importance of standing up for what is right. Through their performances and writing, students demonstrated both strong content knowledge and personal voice while thoughtfully connecting to our unit’s essential question.

We were incredibly proud of the courage, creativity, and intellectual engagement our students displayed throughout this culminating event in partnership with Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Today, 5th students worked on an important literacy skill by integrating information from multiple texts on the same topic. By comparing and combining what they learned, they’re building a deeper understanding and strengthening their ability to write and speak with confidence.
