This weekend our little friends completed a zoo animal scavenger hunt at the Lincoln Park Zoo. They used the zoo campus maps as well as the ZooScav app to complete the challenges and earn points as a whole team. Congrats kiddos!

Here's to Historical Nonfiction. 📖
In our Unmasking the Letter American History class, our unschoolers are tackling a difficult text and learning to identify propaganda techniques such as fear-mongering, "us vs. Them," and dehumanization. They are learning how to read between the lines to understand a speaker’s hidden fears and motives.
They will continue to learn how to spot anachronism and verify the historical accuracy of sources using primary documents like the 1705 Slave Codes.
We are guiding them through analytical thinking and writing using the Willie Lynch Letter, and encouraging them to move beyond summarizing what happened and begin explaining how it was planned to work. This is unschooling.

We love coming up with new ways to help our little friends learn and enjoy phonics. Here's how we help our tutoring friends track and recall what they learn while building a study notebook.

Vowel Sounds! 🍎
Try reading this: TH CT ST N TH MT.
Hard, right? That’s because vowels are the glue that holds our words together. Without them, we’re just a bunch of consonants shouting in a hallway. 🗣️❌
Currently in the trenches with our 1st grade unschoolers teaching the difference between 'short a' (🍎) and 'short e' (🐘). It’s all fun and games until 'bat' becomes 'bet' and suddenly the whole sentence is a lie.
Why we're obsessing over A-E-I-O-U in K-3rd:
1️⃣ Syllable Power: Every single syllable needs a vowel sound. No vowel = no word.
2️⃣ Decoding Magic: If they can't master these sounds, they’re basically guessing at words like they're playing a high-stakes game of Wheel of Fortune. 🎡
3️⃣ Spelling Sanity: It’s the difference between your kid writing 'I luv u' and 'I lv u.' (Okay, both are cute, but one is a lot easier to read on a Mother’s Day card!)
Drop a '🙋🏾♀️' if you’ve spent more than 20 minutes today making an 'octopus' face to explain the letter O.

The Success Story! 🙌🏾
Data-driven and student-approved! ✅
Our latest math assessments are helping Friends of Cabrini middle schoolers bridge the gap between "getting it" and "mastering it."
These tools have been essential for gaining sight of individual improvements and keeping our learners motivated.
Watching that progress bar climb is our favorite part of the day?🚀📊
