❄️⛄️The clocks have been set back and winter is beginning!🥶
Cold and dry weather doesn't mean we have to let our voices suffer! Here are some tips for keeping your voices healthy and happy during these chilled months.
-Did you know it can take 48-72 hours for water to properly absorb into your body? It's important to stay proactive with your water consumption, especially if you know you have a performance coming up! Yesterday's water is today's hydration😁
-Similar to athletes before a big game or meet, keeping your body and vocal muscles warm is essential. Since the body loses a large percentage of heat through the head and neck, it's important to wear a scarf and hat (and mask!) outside! Bundle up! 🧤🧥🧣
-While drinking water is the most effective way to keep your voice hydrated, you may want to consider additional modes of moisture. This includes steam from showers or heatless humidifiers, herbal teas or warm water with honey and lemon, and for anyone with a radiator: placing a bowl of water over the radiator to provide some steam into your home!
-You may want to try a nasal gel such Ayr Saline Nasal Gel, which you can apply during the day or before bed to keep things moist while your rest.
Remember, it's all about being proactive, and loving your body through all the seasons!
Comment below if you've tried any of these, or if you have other methods to cold weather vocal health! ❤

Voice feeling tired? Have a big performance or presentation in a few hours but are worried your voice won't make it? All you need is a straw! (smaller diameters are better!) (reusable is best!)
Get your straw, and begin warming up with some "oooh's", sirens, and other easy sounds. Careful not to push too hard. Phonating, or producing sound through a straw helps our vocal cords to vibrate more efficiently. This is due to the backpressure that minimizes the differentiation in the space between the subglottal and supraglottal spaces.
Subglottal space: Space below vocal folds
Supraglottal space: Space above vocal folds
Semi-Occluded: mouth is partially closed
Pair this technique with lots of water, throat coat, or anything else that helps to hydrate and sooth the throat! You should be vocalizing in no time!
This technique also works if you place the straw in water! Prepare for more bubbles with this version!!
Stay tuned for more semi-occluded vocal exercises and vocal tips!
