Providence St. Mel is a private secular Preschool through 12 college-preparatory school founded in Chicago in 1978. In December 2010, it was named one of the nation’s 12 Great Schools in renowned education researcher Samuel Casey Carter’s latest book, "On Purpose", a study of 3,500 schools. Every year, without exception, 100% of the school’s high school seniors have been admitted to excellent four

-year colleges or universities. More than half are admitted to the nation’s top tier schools. Located in a beautiful historic building previously owned by the Sisters of Providence, Providence St. Mel has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as “A Model for Urban Education” and its successful educational formula was captured in the award-winning documentary, “The Providence Effect.” In its ranking of more than 1,700 schools in Chicago and the six surrounding counties, Chicago magazine listed Providence St. Mel on its “A+” team.

Providence St. Mel launched its first Honors Seminar, led by Principal Dr. Wessel. Selected students participated in a discussion centered on the essential question: What gives a leader the right to be followed?
Students read and discussed Book II of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, examining the relationship between character and leadership.
Future seminars will feature readings from Max Weber, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Frederick Douglass as students continue exploring leadership through some of history’s most influential thinkers.

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ PSM Cross Country is off and running!

Cross Country tryouts were held this week, and Coach Resterhouse is excited about what’s ahead this season! She’s looking forward to seeing plenty of PRs from our runners — with a team that’s grown since last year!

The Knights hit the course for their first meet on September 8 at the Legion Classic Series Invite #1 at Legion Park.

We can’t wait to cheer them on all season long! 💜💛

Tonight, our Middle School and High School parents got to be students again for a few hours during our MS/HS Parent Orientation “Mini-Knight!” 💜💛

Parents followed their children’s school schedules, traveled from classroom to classroom, met each of their teachers, and got a firsthand look at the classes, expectations, and experiences that make up their students’ school days.

It was a great evening of connection, conversation, and community—and a wonderful way to kick off another exciting year at Providence St. Mel!

That’s a wrap on Week One! 🎉

From the first bell Monday morning to the final dismissal Friday afternoon, it’s been a great start to the 2026–27 school year at Providence St. Mel!

Our students are settling into their classrooms, reconnecting with friends and teachers, and getting back into the rhythm of school. We’re excited for everything the year ahead will bring.

The halls are active, the classrooms are full, and a new school year has officially begun! 💜💛

Today we welcome our students back to Providence St. Mel for the first day of school. We're excited to meet all the new faces, greet the familiar ones, and start the school year with the ENERGY of a fresh start.

For almost half a century, PSM students have walked through these doors ready to work, plan, build and dream toward a future filled with possibilities. Today, the class of 2027 begins the last year of their PSM journey, while the class of 2041 enters the building for the first time. We celebrate our tradition of excellence and look forward to the great things all our students will accomplish.

Providence St. Mel was proud to take part in today’s Danny Davis Back to School Parade! 🎉

Our students joined the celebration, walking the parade route alongside the PSM bus, greeting families, and handing out plenty of PSM goodies along the way.

It was a great day to celebrate our community and help kick off another school year with energy and excitement.

Today, we were excited to welcome our newest Providence St. Mel students to campus! 💜💛💜💛

Students received their class schedules, IDs, and locker combinations before spending some time getting to know the PSM faculty through games and a fun round of teacher trivia. They toured the school, learned their way around their new home, and faced one of the first challenges of the school year—opening their lockers for the first time! 🔐

It was a great afternoon filled with new faces, new friendships, and plenty of excitement as we get ready for the start of another school year.

Our faculty is back! Today marked the start of Orientation Week as we welcomed our teachers back to Providence St. Mel to prepare for another great school year.

The week ahead will be filled with planning, collaboration, and preparation as our faculty gets ready to welcome students back to the classroom on Monday the 17. We’re excited for the year ahead and grateful for the dedication, talent, and commitment our teachers bring to our students every day.

This summer, Providence St. Mel students Kaiden and Isaiah spent two weeks studying at the Oxford Academia program at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford.
Both students majored in engineering and worked with their group to design a robot capable of cleaning the windows of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. During the program they visited London and a Mini Cooper factory to see the theory they were learning applied in the real world. Kaiden also minored in psychology, while Isaiah minored in philosophy, rounding out their Oxford experience
Dr. Wessel had the opportunity to visit Kaiden and Isaiah at Oxford, attend their classes, and watch their impressive final presentation. Their creativity, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to challenge themselves exemplify the Providence St. Mel tradition of Virtus cm Scientia—Character with Knowledge.
We are incredibly proud of Kaiden and Isaiah for representing Providence St. Mel at Oxford!

You know school is starting soon when Goldman Sachs visits PSM! For the 8th year in a row, the Community Teamworks group from Goldman Sachs volunteered their time to help clean up the school and grounds in preparation for the new school year. We are so grateful for their support over the years - and we thank them for their commitment to our mission and to keeping PSM beautiful!
