Get your toddler talking using CHOICES!๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

We ALL want choices, our toddlers included! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

But choices are also a great way to support your childโ€™s language development.

Just starting out?๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
Give choices between a PREFERRED and NON-PREFERRED item.

โ€œOlives or crackers?โ€
This may get them engaged and giggling, but itโ€™s also effective because itโ€™s much more motivating to make a choice so they donโ€™t get the non-preferred item!

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE:
โ€œWhat do you want to drink? Milk or water?โ€
*reaching for milkโ€
โ€œMilk?โ€
*still reachingโ€
โ€œWant milk, sure! Milk. Letโ€™s get some milk.โ€

What questions do you have about choices?! Drop them below and letโ€™s chat!๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Ever felt anxious when you heard what another friendโ€™s child is doing? ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Ever felt dread as you head to your well check because youโ€™ll have to fill out the Ages & Stages Questionnaire, knowing youโ€™ll fill in one too many โ€œnot yetโ€ responses? ๐Ÿ˜ž

Ever feel like you want to scream at a professional that your child is more than their skills? That they are funny, sweet, silly, kind, SO MUCH MORE than their milestones? ๐Ÿ˜ซ

Milestone talk can elicit a lot of anxiety, I get it!

But we also canโ€™t shy away from talking about them. The fact is they are signals to know when our babes need help!

But mama please remember, milestones donโ€™t define your baby OR you.

They donโ€™t indicate worth.

They donโ€™t indicate value.

They just give us clues when our sweet babes need some extra help ๐Ÿ’•

Help! How do I help my toddler imitate words! ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ (Youโ€™ll want to save this for later!)

IMPORTANT: before we expect these words to come we must make sure they developmentally are ready! Do they have the 11 skills that come before words? (see previous posts). ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

A few of those precursor skills include imitating actions and sounds (shhh, coughing etc).๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Then, really focus on exclamatory words!

๐Ÿ”…UH OH!
๐Ÿ”…WOW
๐Ÿ”…WHEE
๐Ÿ”…BOOM
๐Ÿ”…OUCH
๐Ÿ”…YAY

Why do these often develop as first words?
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปThey have simple syllable shapes
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปThey evoke a somewhat emotional response (often excitement & fun)
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸปWe often naturally pair an action with them

Be sure to swipe through to see ideas for modeling these fun words!

And if youโ€™re looking for more concrete ideas on how to support your toddlers language development grab my Talking with Toddlers cards! (link in bio) ๐ŸŽ‰

Did your toddler use any of these exclamatory words early on? Letโ€™s chat in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Baby Ames, we are head over heels in love with you. ๐Ÿ’•

Letโ€™s get them babies talking! ๐Ÿ—ฃ

One of my favorite tools to get little ones engaged AND support their language development is lift the flap books! ๐Ÿ“š

Any time you pick up a book itโ€™s a good thing ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

But how can we maximize that time for language growth AND increase their engagement? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ”…Knock on the flaps
๐Ÿ”…Say & wave โ€œbyeโ€ before closing them
๐Ÿ”…Blow kisses before you close them
๐Ÿ”…Model โ€œopenโ€ before you open flaps
๐Ÿ”…Give them directions โ€œopen it, close itโ€
๐Ÿ”…Model actions as you look at pictures

What are some of your favorite lift that flap books? We love Dear Zoo around here! Tell me some of your favorites! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Toddler just not interested in talking? Give this a try! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

If we want to get our toddlers talking we need to make things FUN & ENGAGING! ๐ŸŽ‰

We also need to meet them where they are and be aware of the development of imitation as a whole! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

So what does this mean? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Start with modeling actions with fun noises (Oooo! Ahhhh! Whoooosh!)๐Ÿ’จ

Then continue the actions but work in fun exclamatory words (CRASH! WHEEEE! BOOM!) ๐Ÿ’ฅ

And finally pair actions with simple functional words! (Up up up! Down! Hat!) ๐Ÿงข

Have fun with it! Put the hat on your head, make it fall down, then offer the hat to them! ๐Ÿงข

Stack multiple hats on your head saying โ€œMORE?!โ€ & hold your hand out for them to give you another hat. ๐Ÿงข๐Ÿงข๐Ÿงข

Guys, I promise this activity will get the giggles going, and chances are it will get the imitation going too! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

Give this one and try and report back in the comments!๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

We are grateful to add another boy to our crew ๐Ÿ’™

3 boys. All who had/have due dates within days of each other. ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿผ

So you know what that means.....

YOU get joint birthday gifts, YOU get joint birthday gifts, YOU ALL GET JOINT BIRTHDAY GIFTS! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

On another note, Iโ€™ve been quiet here because, to be honest, feeling very sick with two toddlers was a challenge and it took everything I had to just show up for my family ๐Ÿ’• Thank you for the space and your patience as I get back to the speech and language content!

We are so excited, we are so grateful, we are honored to be entrusted with this privilege, and I can not wait to watch these 3 boys grow! ๐Ÿ’™

(If you know our youngest, Boston, you know he is a mommas boy to the core so this photo is just so accurate ๐Ÿ˜‚).

Now letโ€™s take a moment to celebrate our kiddos! Whatโ€™s your FAVORITE thing about your child right now?! Letโ€™s chat! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

The biggest โ€œAH HA!โ€ moment for parents AND children? ๐Ÿค”(Youโ€™ll want to save this for future reference!)

When they realize there are SO MANY skills that come before a child talks on their own functionally! ๐ŸŽ‰

The skill of imitation typically develops in a sequence.

Itโ€™s like walking. A baby with no trunk strength isnโ€™t just going to get up and walk.

We need to work on the foundational skills first. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

We have to BACK ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป IT ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป UP ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

And mama, want to know the beautiful thing? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Often times when we meet our babies & toddlers where they are developmentally their engagement and connection increases too! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

So break out those silly noises and actions as you are playing with your family this week! (GOBBLE GOBBLE ๐Ÿฆƒ)

โ€œHow do I get my baby/toddler TALKING?โ€ ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

This is by far my most frequently asked question. For good reason! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

We want to hear our babies voices! ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพ

And while my whole page is filled with tips to get your toddler talking, hereโ€™s a super practical one! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Shift from QUESTIONS to COMMENTS! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Questions place pressure. (Cue loss of attention, walking away, or a meltdown). ๐Ÿฅด

Comments model what we want THEM to say in a low pressure, FUN way! ๐ŸŽ‰

Now questions can be a great thing when a child has an established language system!

But when they are first LEARNING language you will have much greater success by using comments! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Have any mamas out there seen success with your baby or toddler imitating comments youโ€™ve made? Iโ€™d love to hear about it! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

When do babies learn BYE BYE?๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ (Save this post for ideas!)

In typical development:
๐Ÿ”…Waving - between 9-10 months
๐Ÿ”…โ€Byeโ€- sometime after 12 months

Why is waving & saying โ€œbyeโ€ important? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Well the ability to greet and respond to greetings is an important social skill.๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพ

And waving, or imitating an action, is an important early imitation skill, which will lay the foundation for imitating words down the road! ๐Ÿ—ฃ

What is the BEST thing you can do to teach your child to wave and say โ€œBYE BYEโ€?๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

๐ŸŽ‰MODEL, MODEL, MODEL. ๐ŸŽ‰

But the key? Model in context.๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

Itโ€™s one thing to imitate a random gesture or word.๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Itโ€™s another thing to learn to USE a gesture or word appropriately. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

So here are some ideas to set up opportunities to model โ€œBYEโ€ in a context that makes sense:
๐Ÿ”…Lift the flap books
๐Ÿ”…Peek-a-boo
๐Ÿ”…Photos
๐Ÿ”…Hiding under a blanket
๐Ÿ”…Hiding behind their high chair
๐Ÿ”…Model greetings consistently as you leave

Is your child saying โ€œbye byeโ€ yet? When is a time you find yourself modeling โ€œbyeโ€ often throughout your day? Letโ€™s chat! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
