Congratulations to all DePaul students graduating this year. A special word of recognition goes to three DePaul Albanian Studies students, Ensara Sejko, Anxhela Kapllani, Alexandra Lewis-Penland, who graduated this year and completed the DePaul Certificate in Albanian and Southeastern European Studies.

Taking coursework in Albanian Studies has helped me close that gap and step out of my own perspective. It’s allowed me to learn about my family’s past and talk to relatives back home in a way that feels more real. "This scholarship supports that journey. Each academic year, DePaul Albanian Studies presents the Hidai "Eddie" Bregu Scholarship Award in Albanian and Southeastern European Studies to students who excel in Albanian Studies courses and promote Albanian and Southeastern European culture both on and off campus.

This scholarship is made possible by the generosity of Hidai "Eddie" Bregu, donor and namesake of DePaul University's endowed Albanian Studies Program. The Scholarship Award supports students' academic growth and recognizes their commitment to Albanian culture, history, and language, as well as the broader culture and history of Southeastern Europe.

Today and in the coming days, we are proud to feature our three newest Scholarship recipients: David Raskaj, Dafina Tahiri, and Arbana Lamce. We celebrate our students, their achievements, and their unwavering dedication to Albanian Studies.

Çdo vit akademik, Programi i Studimeve Shqiptare në Universitetin DePaul ofron Bursën "Hidai 'Eddie' Bregu" në Studimet Shqiptare dhe të Europës Juglindore, për studentët që dallohen në klasat e Studimeve Shqiptare dhe promovojnë kulturën shqiptare dhe atë të Europës Juglindore brenda dhe jashtë DePaul-it.
Kjo Bursë bëhet e mundur falë bujarisë së Hidai "Eddie" Bregut, donatorit dhe emërtuesit të Katedres se Studimeve Shqiptare në Universitetin DePaul.
Bursa mbështet përparimin akademik të studentëve dhe shpërblen interesin e tyre për gjuhen, kulturën,dhe historinë e Shqiptareve, si dhe për kulturën dhe historinë e Europës Juglindore.
Sot dhe në ditët në vijim, do të prezantojmë tre fituesit e rinj të Bursës: David Raskaj, Dafina Tahiri dhe Arbana Lamce.
Jemi krenarë për studentët tanë, për arritjet dhe përkushtimin e tyre ndaj Studimeve Shqiptare.

"This scholarship means a lot to me because it has helped me feel more connected to where I come from. I’m a first-generation Albanian-American, and growing up here, I sometimes felt far from my family’s stories and experiences. Taking coursework in Albanian Studies has helped me close that gap and step out of my own perspective. It’s allowed me to learn about my family’s past and talk to relatives back home in a way that feels more real. This scholarship supports that journey. It honors the vision of Hidai “Eddie” Bregu, who believed in education, identity, and community. To me, it’s not just financial help - it’s encouragement to keep learning about my roots. I took ALB 395: FLAC in Albanian Studies, and it really changed how I think about Albania. The discussions, all in Albanian, went deeper than I expected. We talked about cultural myths and how Albania’s modern identity is more about community than religion. What stood out most was realizing how much history and meaning lie behind small things I grew up around but never questioned. It helped me see Albania as more than just a place - it’s a mix of stories, values, and strength that I now understand better. This program matters to me because it connects people like me - Albanians who grew up far from home - to our culture in a real way. Most of my family is still in Albania, and what I’ve learned here helps me know them better and has made me feel even more connected to that land. It also gives our community visibility. Albanian Studies reminds me that even though we’re far away, we share something powerful. I want to keep that alive here in Chicago, to stay involved, and help others feel that same connection".

Another academic year has come to an end. Congratulations to all our students! We look forward to seeing you again in the Fall for another exciting and fruitful year.

Wednesday evening, at the Modern Languages Department End-of-Year celebration, we marked seven years of DePaul Albanian Studies and honored the students who completed the Certificate in Albanian and Southeastern European Studies this year: Ensara Sejko, Anxhela Kapllani, Cara Clements, and Alexandra Lewis-Penland.

Ensara Sejko, also President of the Albanian Studies Student Club at DePaul, delivered a wonderful speech on behalf of all Albanian Studies students. We could not be prouder of Ensara and of every one of our students.

I was truly moved to meet our students' parents, relatives, and siblings who joined us for the occasion. I feel grateful for their words of recognition and appreciation for my work. I know firsthand the sacrifices parents make to support their children, to offer them a first-class education and a better life.

For me personally, it was a moment of singular joy. Building from scratch the first Program of Albanian Studies in the history of American academia, and watching it grow and thrive year after year, has been one of the most exciting and creative endeavors of my life. The long and beautiful journey continues.

"As four wonderful years come to end, it is so special to receive my certificate of Albanian and Southeast European Studies and celebrate with the Modern Languages Department today.

One of the reasons I chose DePaul University was the existence of its Albanian Studies Program, the first of its kind in the history of American academia.

Through the work of Dr. Gazmend Kapllani (and the other professors who support this program), I have been able to explore Albanian thinkers, poets, history, and traditions in a way that has deepened both my knowledge and my identity.

For me, Albanian Studies is not just history though. It’s also about the present and future of Albania.

Honored and grateful for these past four years, with the Modern Languages Department, and most of all, the Albanian Studies".

Dje në mbrëmje, në festën per fundin e vitit akademik të Departamentit të Gjuhëve Bashkëkohore në Universitetin DePaul, kremtuam shtatëvjetorin e Studimeve Shqiptare në DePaul dhe nderuam me titullin Hidai "Eddie" Bregu studentët tanë që përfunduan këtë vit Certifikatën në Studimet Shqiptare dhe të Europës Juglindore: Ensara Sejko, Anxhela Kapllani, Cara Clements, Alexandra Lewis-Penland.

Ensara Sejko, gjithashtu Presidente e Klubit të Studentëve të Studimeve Shqiptare në DePaul, mbajti një fjalim të mrekullueshëm në emër të të gjithë studentëve të Studimeve Shqiptare. Jemi shumë krenarë për Ensarën dhe për secilin prej studentëve tanë.

U emocionova dhe u preka vecanerisht nga takimi me prindërit, të afërmit, vëllezërit e motrat e studentëve tanë që na u bashkuan në festën tonë. Jam mirënjohës për fjalët e tyre dhe vlerësimin për punën time, si edhe për përkrahjen dhe dashamirësinë e tyre gjithe keto vite. Prindërit bëjnë sakrifica të mëdha për t'u ofruar fëmijëve të tyre një arsim të nivelit të lartë dhe një të ardhme të mirë.

Për mua personalisht, festa dhe takimi i djeshëm ishte një moment gëzimi. Themelimi dhe krijimi nga e para e Programit të parë të Studimeve Shqiptare në historinë e universiteteve amerikane, si edhe fakti që ky Program rritet dhe forcohet vit pas viti, është pa dyshim një nga ndërmarrjet dhe arritjet më emocionuese dhe krijuese të jetes sime.

Shumë vite të tjera pune dhe surpriza të bukura na presin.
Më poshtë mund të lexoni një fragment të shkurtër nga fjala e Ensara Sejkos para të gjithë studentëve të 13 Programeve të departamentit tonë, dhe mund te gjeni gjithashtu videon e plotë të fjalimit te saj.

"Ndërkohë qe katër viteve të mrekullueshme po i vjen fundi, eshte kënaqësi e veçantë të marr Certifikatën time të Studimeve Shqiptare dhe të Evropës Juglindore dhe të festoj me Departamentin e Gjuhëve Moderne sot.

Një nga arsyet që zgjodha Universitetin DePaul ishte ekzistenca e Programit të Studimeve Shqiptare, programi i parë në historinë e universiteteve amerikane.

Përmes punës së Dr. Gazmend Kapllanit (dhe profesorëve të tjerë që mbështesin këtë program), kam pasur mundësi të eksploroj mendimtarët, poetët, historinë dhe traditat shqiptare në një mënyrë që ka thelluar si njohuritë, ashtu edhe identitetin tim.

Për mua, Studimet Shqiptare nuk janë vetëm histori. Ato kanë të bëjnë me të tashmen dhe të ardhmen e Shqipërisë.

Back home after a wonderful book tour in Italy, I am looking forward to our Modern Languages End-of-Year Party, where we will celebrate the students of all our Programs.
I will start the celebration with a gathering honoring the students of the Italian Program — given that over the past two years I have also been associated with and teaching for the Italian Program, building shared curricular projects and other collaborations between Italian and Albanian Studies.
We will then move to DePaul's historic Cortelyou Commons for the highlight of the evening: the celebration of our Albanian Studies students, who will be presented with the Hidai "Eddie" Bregu Student Excellence Award in recognition of their outstanding achievement in Albanian Studies courses and their dedication to promoting Albanian language and culture both at DePaul and
beyond. We will also honor and share our joy with the students' families and parents attending the event.
We are so proud of our Albanian Studies students, and we're looking forward to celebrate and have fun!

Sapo u ktheva nga një udhëtim i mrekullueshëm takimesh me lexuesit italianë dhe po përgatitem për festën e Fundvitit të Departamentit të Gjuhëve Bashkekohore të Universitetit DePaul, ku do nderojmë studentët e të gjitha Programeve tona.

Four Blue Demons Alumni are now Pulitzer Prize winners!

Congratulations are in order for Jeremy Gorner (LAS ‘04), Claire Malon (CMN ‘21, ‘22), Laura Rodríguez Presa (CMN ‘14) and Richard Requena (CMN ‘20, ‘23) who are part of the team that won journalism’s most prestigious awards. The team won a 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Local Reporting for their powerful coverage of immigration enforcement activity in the city.

"We could not be prouder of our alumni," says journalism program chair Jason Martin. "Every day they set the example of thorough and ethical reporting.”
