Free the kids!!
I’m so honored and excited to have my microschool featured on the front page of the today!
When I first had this idea 5 years ago of quitting my high school teaching job to educate in a way that actually aligns with my values and what I know to be true about educating kids after 10+ years of experience… of creating a learning environment that meets individual kids’ real needs, at their pace, acknowledging their full humanity, no tests or grades, just authentic learning and real relationships…I didn’t know if anybody else would actually “get it.”
I just knew that I was burnt out on having to make decisions in my own classroom that were necessary for group management, but not always in the best interest of individual kids.
I knew that my own kindergartener wasn’t well-served by doing worksheets at a table all day, and needed to learn using her whole body, and needed a chance to explore her own curiosity, not just follow directions.
I’m so proud of the work my team and I have done over the past few years to cultivate a community where kids are trusted, learning is authentic, and students actually want to come to school on a Monday morning.
