Have you heard of decodable books?

When first starting to read it can be challenging to pick out books for your kiddos. Decodable books is the place to start!

These books work in parallel to a phonics program. Letters are introduced and then a book is created to help practice reading target words. These books will not use words containing letters that children haven't learned.

In this book, children have learned the letters s, a, t, i, p. Therefore, we can use words such as it, at, sit, and sat.

This helps to keep books specific to a child’s reading level and gives them the opportunity to have independent reading practice. True confidence builders!

Books start out conveniently simple and then get more complicated as new letters are introduced.

If you have more questions about picking books out for your child then don’t hesitate to message us!

How many letters should your child learn each week?

We have found that the magic number for children between the ages of 4-6 years old is 2 new letters a week. This gives children enough time and practice to learn the correct pronunciation of the letter, how to read it in targeted words, and also how to use it for spelling.

The sound “igh” as in night can be written many different ways. Here are 5 of them! Who can give me some example words using these letter combinations???

I’ll take the first one....y - fly

Blending can be abstract and difficult for children. How can we make it easier?

Letter cards!

Letter sounds need to be learned to automaticity. This means that children should be able to look at a letter card and say it's corresponding sound INSTANTLY.

A major problem for beginning readers is that they do not know their letter sounds well. This makes blending very frustrating!

An easy solution is to review letter sounds 1-2 times a day.

This will take you less than a minute but will make all the difference in your child's reading ability.

Trust me, this is a game changer! I've taught over 2,000 children how to read and this is one of the most (if not the most) common problems children have.

Just teaching children their letter sounds is not enough! They need to be able understand how to manipulate these letter sounds for both reading and spelling.

Phonics is a powerful tool if we teach it right. In our course we teach only two letters per week. This gives our children ample time to master each letter.

Our steps to success:
1. Introduce a letter sound
2. Practice reading targeted words
3. Use the letter in a decodable book
4. Review until mastered

Start with these 9 letters when teaching your little one how to read!

s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, ck

It is better to use this letter order instead of the alphabet because you can build words faster. For example, you can practice reading at, it, sat, and sit after learning just 4 letters! The alphabet is not so convenient.

How many letters should you introduce to your child each week?

This really depends on their age. For children between the ages of 4-6 years old, we recommend teaching no more than two letters or letter combinations per week. This gives children time to master the correct pronunciations and also practice reading target words that use those letters.

As adults, we often taking reading for granted. It is something we have been doing for years and it has become automatic for us.

We don’t realize how complicated it can be until we need to teach it to our own children.

This Read. Write. Alphabet. has all the information your little student will need to master reading and spelling.

Studies have found that 75% of American 3rd graders are not proficient readers.

This is a terrifying statistic.

Being able to read proficiently by 3rd grade is a milestone for learning development. Starting in 4th grade, children are expected to use reading as a way to learn other subjects like math and science.

In my experience teaching 2,500+ children reading in China, it doesn't need to be that way.

After using 15 Minute Reading, Chinese students learning their second language are able to read at a 1st and 2nd-grade level by KINDERGARTEN.

15 Minute Reading was designed to teach Chinese children who CAN'T speak English, imagine what it could do for your child who CAN!

Don't let your child be a statistic. Teaching your child can be super easy, and it only takes 15 minutes a day.
