What better way to discover what the word mortar means after reading it in a book, than using shaving cream to build with blocks!

The new sensory bin is here! Birthday cake batter! Inspired by the Happy Toddler Playtime page on Pintrest.
The "cake" is homemade cloud dough with a few pinches of colored rice.

What does playful learning look like?
One of our young friends noticed that two of our architecture cards looked alike. We googled why and learned about Russian onion domes. Wooden onion dome toys were ordered. Another young friend became engrossed in building because of those new domes and spent days creating the towers from the architecture cards. The learning was all theirs.

Here's the newest sensory bin! If you're new to sensory bins here are some tried and true thoughts we stick to around here:
* don't complicate it- this is just three different types of beans (don't use raw kidney beans, they're toxic) and a few pinecones
* get ok with the mess or use items that aren't messy- last month was milk jug lids
* know your audience- this is going to go over very well with the toddlers who love dumping and pouring and less so with older preschoolers who have evolved their play
