A study in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa among 162 people living with HIV may have implications for how patients receive medication. Researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine have shown that home delivery of HIV medicines in South Africa, paired with monitoring of antiretroviral therapy, showed a significant increase in viral suppression among patients compared to those who received care in a clinical setting. This finding may be important for the future of healthcare in the way it suited a context of low income and high unemployment. Additionally, this could be beneficial for antiretroviral therapy adherence and viral suppression in men who engage less in clinic-based HIV care than women. Check it out!

This article describes the views of Dr. Eugene Richardson and his idea of “mental coloniality.” He describes the issues with attributing the size of outbreaks, such as the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, to peoples’ ignorance and believing in misinformation. He states that “coloniality tries to dictate how people perceive the world around them.” Histories of violence and exploitation by foreign countries could result in fear of vaccines arriving in vehicles driven by foreigners. He speaks about how things like repairing the colonial legacies and dismantling unfair agreements could prevent massive outbreaks in the future. Finally, Dr. Richardson relates this to the COVID-19 pandemic in the way black individuals are dying two to three times more than white people in the United States due to higher exposure risks among black people that must be improved.

As rich countries hoard potential coronavirus vaccine doses, rest of world could go without 11/03/2020

This article discusses the possibility of a two-tiered system in the future regarding the availability of corona vaccines in different countries. An organization called the Cover-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility, or Covax, aims to create and equitably provide 2 billion doses of the coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year. However, many countries are not involved in Covax and this makes it more difficult for the organization to make its plans a reality. This article outlines the importance of distributing the vaccine to those who at a greater risk rather than those who have economic advantages. Check it out!

Ending the pandemic will take global access to COVID-19 treatment and vaccines – which means putting ethics before profits 10/20/2020

This article looks at the ethical distribution of future COVID-19 treatments with regard to equal availability for all socioeconomic classes and countries. The article highlights the current cost of COVID-19 treatment, Remedesivir, at $3,200 for a typical treatment course of six vials. The price tags of treatments and unequal distribution have caused issues with other global health issues in the past, including HIV and tuberculosis. The article also speaks on how these inequities were fought and improved across multiple countries. This emphasis on ethics is an important focus with regards to the way the pandemic has already caused a greater impact on people of certain races and socioeconomic classes.

Ending the pandemic will take global access to COVID-19 treatment and vaccines – which means putting ethics before profits The high cost of pharmaceuticals often means only the richest patients get lifesaving medicines. As coronavirus drugs emerge, it will require hard, creative work to ensure they're available to all.

Now It’s Not Safe at Home Either. Wildfires Bring Ashen Air Into the House. 09/15/2020

As the COVID-19 pandemic still runs rampant throughout the United States, many people are still being recommended to stay at home. However, the West coast is facing a major problem with this: disastrous wildfires are creating unhealthy air quality that can seep into the home. What is supposed to be a refuge during the pandemic is becoming tainted with yet another large global problem--climate change. Individually, both of these things affect the world at a large scale. When combined, they create a world that feels almost unlivable with minuscule security, or even a chance to breathe.

Now It’s Not Safe at Home Either. Wildfires Bring Ashen Air Into the House. Our reporter, a San Francisco resident, describes family life amid a pandemic and a natural disaster.
