Having watched the new movie version of Dune, I realize that I was a budding Tantrika long before I was aware that there was a phenomenon called Ta**ra.

I read Dune during my early days of university (so in my late teens or early 20’s). And then—realizing I *needed* to remember the Litany Against Fear—I typed it out on an index card and 'laminated' it with scotch tape. I have carried it in my wallet ever since.

"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

So how does this correlate with Ta**ra, you ask? It's the idea of "sitting with" one's fear and not being subsumed by it. Allowing the fear (or any emotion) to wash over you. As you sit, you may soon come to realize that the emotion is not you, does not define you, and that the terror will subside. You will come out whole.

To help me further understand / embody a word / thought that strikes me, I search through the sutras of the Vijnana Bhairava. For the word 'fear' sutras 87 and 88 speak of sitting through the night rain storm and becoming one with Bhairava, a form of the universe.

And in the Radiance Sutras—a poetic rendition by Lorin Roche—Radiance Sutra 64 says: …"Throw off all hesitation. Become one with the fear."

Radiance Sutra 65 reads:

Close your eyes and imagine
An expanse of terrible darkness surrounds you—
No objects, no light, no moon, no stars—
Nothing but blackness spreading to infinity.

Do not shrink in terror; do not turn away.
Give yourself to the blackness
With no hope of light.
Surrender completely.

Contemplate this feeling,
Merge with the mystery of the night.

It is, perhaps, quite unfortunate that Western science's association with Shiva comes from Oppenheimer, at the explosion of the first atomic bomb, quoting the Bhagavad Gita. As Arjuna asks Krishna to reveal his universal form comes the quote, "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." The Sanskrit translation to death is often interpreted as Shiva.

As an alternative, I offer, from the Origin of Species where Charles Darwin wrote, "Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows."

If ever there was a Western scientific perspective aligned with the true nature of Shiva, I've never heard one.

As Shiva is actually perceived, "Shiva's destruction is not negative. It is a positive, nourishing, and constructive destruction which builds and transforms life and energy for the welfare of the world and the beings that inhabit it. He destroys in order to renew and regenerate life forms and facilitate the transformation, evolution, or modifications of Nature." (http://www.hinduwebsite.com/hinduism/siva.asp)

How different would Western science be if we realized that the fundamental principle of biology - evolution - was completely dependent on the energy of Shiva?

The full quote from Darwin so wonderfully expresses the marvel of nature, that I'll end with it here for appreciation.

"Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."

Whether you follow Kashmiri Shaivism or are a Minbari from Babylon 5, this number holds meaning.

In Kashmiri Shaivism, the Trika system describes the nature of the Divine, the world, and the individual (which is actually 1, but that's another concept).

What we do in the world can be described by our life energies flowing in a triangle of Desire (iccha), Knowledge (jnana), and Action (kriya).

In Babylon 5, Minbari belief also revolves around three: light, dark, and grey. Mysticism in the balance of society.
