The newest wave of massive cuts at The Washington Post hurts. Deeply. But it also exposes a painful hypocrisy.
When massive cuts hit a legacy outlet, mainstream media moves quickly to produce news coverage, op-eds calling for empathy, and justified warnings that “democracy is at greater risk of falling.”
Even accounting for scale, that concern grows quiet—nearly a whisper—when a student newsroom gets silenced. Instead, students are expected to be brave and “seek truth” while operating with virtually no legal safety net, especially at independent schools and in states without New Voices protections.
The media industry cannot confront its own decline without first addressing where it begins—in student newsrooms. If mainstream media fails to defend the student newsroom, it should not be surprised when the professional ones crumble.
