Our BEC program has prepared hundreds of MA educators for the bilingual education endorsement. Hear from Dr. Patrick Proctor, BC faculty and program director, about what makes the BEC so special:

“The bilingual education certificate program began with partnerships between Boston College and the Lynn and Salem Public Schools. Since then, we have added collaborations with new partners in which we continue to work closely with educators across the Commonwealth who are dedicated to serving multilingual students, Pre-K-12. Collaborating on the design and instruction of BEC courses has truly been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career, primarily because I have learned so much about multilingualism in education from the many outstanding educators who have participated in the BEC.”

Our SFL courses have brought evidence-based writing instruction to schools across Massachusetts. Hear from Dr. Maria Brisk, SFL course designer, about what SFL means to her:

“Teaching the online courses has been a rewarding experience because it has impacted entire schools, their students and teachers. SFL genre pedagogy has taught students how to use language to express their ideas and knowledge not only in ELA but in science, social studies, and math. Writing has become a fun activity. Multilingual learners have been able to apply to any of their languages. Teachers feel stimulated because they have a coherent way to teach writing and their students’ success is gratifying.”

“I have already made small changes in my classroom regarding assessment and my multilingual students.
