TONIGHT is the HH Garnet Elementary School Back-to-School Night from 5:00โ€“6:30 PM!

Come out and get ready for the new school year with school supplies, helpful community resources, FREE ice cream and more!

We're having a Back-to-School Bash from 5 to 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, Aug. 13. Join us in the back parking lot, where we'll be giving away free school supplies, hygiene products and winter coats for Garnet students as long as supplies last!

Meet community resource providers. Students who visit four and get their tiger paw passport stamped will receive a free ice cream from Get the Scoop.

Parents who sign up for the PTA will also get a free scoop!

Papa Smurf's food truck will be on hand selling meals. Students must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event.

Community resource providers joining us will include: Chestertown Police, Kent County Parks and Recreation, the Shelter Closet, Managed Care, Social Services, the Local Management Board, the Boys and Girls Club, the Book Plate, the Food Bank, Kent Family Center, the Judy Center Early Learning Hub and Lockbriar Farms.

The Kent County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the ๐‘ญ๐™–๐’๐™ก 2026 ๐‘ช๐™ค๐’‰๐™ค๐’“๐™ฉ ๐™ค๐’‡ ๐’•๐™๐’† ๐‘ฒ๐™š๐’๐™ฉ ๐˜พ๐’๐™ช๐’๐™ฉ๐’š ๐‘ช๐™ž๐’•๐™ž๐’›๐™š๐’โ€™๐’” ๐‘จ๐™˜๐’‚๐™™๐’†๐™ข๐’š, a free five-week civic engagement program funded through a grant from the Maryland Two-Fifty Commission. This initiative commemorates the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America by empowering residents with greater knowledge of local government and fostering deeper civic participation.

The Citizenโ€™s Academy offers Kent County residents an opportunity to take part in an interactive, behind-the-scenes educational experience exploring how county government works and how community members can get involved.

Program Overview
Over five weeks, participants will explore key areas of county operations:
โ€ข Week 1: County Administration
An introduction to county governance, administrative structure, financial operations, revenue sources, and partnerships.
โ€ข Week 2: Citizen Engagement
A look at the countyโ€™s Boards, Committees, and Commissions and how residents can participate.
โ€ข Week 3: Public Safety
Insights into emergency preparedness, 911 dispatch, EMS, law enforcement, the detention center, and reentry programs.
โ€ข Week 4: Public Services
An overview of departments that enhance quality of life, including Public Works, Planning & Zoning, Economic & Tourism Development, and Parks & Recreation.
โ€ข Week 5: Commissioners Meeting & Recognition
Participants will attend a public County Commissioners meeting, engage with elected officials, and conclude with a recognition ceremony and refreshments.

Kent County encourages all interested residents to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn more about local government and how they can make a meaningful impact within their community.
