Today our first year students moved into campus for the first time! They will spend their next few days learning the ins and outs of Washington College and Chestertown. We can’t wait for the next four years!

As the Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience celebrated its 25th anniversary this past academic year, it found itself at a historic triple-confluence: a quarter-century of its own innovation, the nation’s semiquincentennial, and the approaching 250th anniversary of Washington College in 2032. In the article from the spring issue of the Washington College magazine linked in the comments, take a look back on a mission that began in 1998 with a visionary $5 million grant from The Starr Foundation, aimed at creating an institute that would not just archive the American experience, but critically engage with it in the public square.

Five books published in 2025 and written by some of the nation’s most renowned historians are finalists for the 2026 George Washington Prize. This annual award celebrates the year’s best works on the founding of our nation, particularly those that broaden public knowledge of early American history.

The $50,000 George Washington Prize, created by George Washington's Mount Vernon, The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and Washington College, is one of the nation’s largest and most notable literary awards. When she was 4 years old, Olivia Calvert '27 noticed trash on the ground and asked her parents why it was there. They told her it was because “some people don’t care about the environment.” This simple exchange struck a chord with the young Calvert.
