The intent is to bring together the best and brightest in what founder Douglass Cater called "a companionship of learning."

The Douglass Cater Society of Junior Fellows is the College's flagship academic enrichment program—one that rewards creativity, initiative and intellectual curiosity with competitive grants to support self-directed undergraduate research and scholarship anywhere in the world.

Last night we had 2 amazing presentations from Lauren Albert and Brigid Baldwin on their trip to Cuba 🇨🇺! They both received short term study abroad grants from Cater ❤️ Great work fellows!

The Cater Society proudly inducted 2️⃣7️⃣ members into our companionship of learning last night! We are so excited to see what is to come from these bright students! After our ceremony, we heard from Gabby Bonds and Kelsey Sanderell about their awesome trip to the rainforest and their research process there. Thank you to our leadership, inductees, members, presenters, and supporters who came ❤️

Special shout out to our current members who presented their research as well as our President, Stevie Lyles, Vice President, Noah Gibson, and our curator, Dr. Clarke-De Reza for a great night. 📚 Research Spotlight ✨

Student Researcher: Celia Long ‘26

Research Project: Analyzing Public Displays of Affection Cross-Nationally

Description: Celia received two separate grants from Cater to support her research on PDA in various major cities across the globe, combining observational research, where she tallied the types and amounts of PDA she witnessed, with anonymous survey data from residents of each city. She learned that PDAs do have noticeable differences from country to country, which can reflect cultural attitudes on affection and sexuality. Between NYC and Madrid, Madrid had more PDA in both frequency (times PDA was seen) and intensity (more intimate displays) than NYC. This observational data, paired with survey responses, showed that Spanish residents are more comfortable displaying PDA than NYC residents. Between Taiwan and Japan, they were relatively even in terms of frequency and intensity of PDA, but differed in the variation of PDA types. Residents of these two countries only displayed hand holding or linking arms, but no other types of PDA (as compared to NYC and Madrid, which showed various others, like kissing or hugging). The observational data and survey responses indicated that people are less comfortable with or accepting of PDA in Asia compared to Spain or New York.
