A studio tradition of processing the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr through art.. this year celebrated at my kitchen table with my 5 & 7 year old.

This place. Where toddlers have explored the squish of play dough for the first time. Where kids have giggled as they paint blindfolded. Where anyone can use a sewing machine! Where children have danced in glowing warrior paint. Where children find their artistic groove and we celebrate it. This place is a piece of my soul, illuminated by the creative spirit of your children. Thank you for these past few years!
Today I packed and organized the studio (holy craft hoarder!) and it’s on to the next chapter. The Kirby Councell Center for Learning will be taking over the space until May. They’re serving a wonderful need in the community this year as we all navigate some version of homeschooling. Kaleidoscope plans to reopen in June 2021, with new partnerships and energy and the best summer of art ever!
So for now it’s goodbye. But only for a while! Keep making art, keep getting messy, and stay weird. ♥️Shelley

Let’s get down to it. My studio serves 95% white kids. This is certainly not intentional, just a glaring example of why we need to get loud and reevaluate. This has been a time of frustration, reflection, and new priorities. Art should not be a privilege! These words are backed with Kaleidoscope’s commitment to make art more accessible to all children in our community. This town is teeming with people that are happy to help make this happen through sponsorships and outreach. It takes a village, it takes time and effort, but as a community we can do better for our children.
