Now we have Hudson Bott! Hudson is joining us as a Junior Programming intern at GIP, supporting our Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) team! 💻✨

In this role, Hudson will be diving into data analysis, honing his precision with code, and collaborating with our incredible team on projects that help keep Maryland’s roads safe. 📊🛣️

This past weekend, GIP staff and students attended a celebration of America's 250th birthday at St. Paul's Parish, Kent, a local historic church. 😊

For the occasion, we created a map of all individuals buried at St. Paul's who were alive in 1776.🌏

Dajana is a sophomore at Washington College and serves as a Senior Programming Intern for SEED (Society, Education, Environment, and Development) projects here at GIP. 🍊🌎 Can you flatten the Earth?

Students in Dr. Rashed’s Introduction to GIS class found out firsthand—with oranges.

In this hands-on map projection activity, groups turned an orange into a model of the Earth, drew reference features on its surface, and then tried to flatten the peel into a usable “world map.” The challenge quickly revealed a fundamental lesson in cartography: every flat map involves tradeoffs in shape, area, distance, or direction.

It’s GIS learning at its best: experiment, observe, problem-solve, and figure out why the maps we use look the way they do.

Washington College’s new GIS minor gives students a chance to work with maps, data, and spatial problem-solving across a wide range of fields. At the Geospatial Innovation Program, they can take those skills further, learning GIS by actually using it on real-world projects.

Meet current staff member Sean Lynn! 📸🎉

Sean’s history with our lab goes way back—he served as a GIP intern during the summers of 2010 to 2012 while completing his degree at Coastal Carolina University (’13). Now, he helps lead the team as our GIS Program Manager!

Just a short time ago, Sean took the floor to speak with our interns and staff about his career path, lessons learned along the way, and advice for navigating the industry. Coming from someone who stood in our interns' shoes over a decade ago, his talk was both relatable and inspiring for everyone in attendance.

We are so excited to highlight and shoutout Rano Marufova ’24! 🎉

Rano graduated from Washington College with a double major in Computer Science and Business Marketing, alongside a minor in Data Science. Up until last month, she was an integral part of our team as a dedicated GIP employee.

This summer, students and staff had the privilege of hearing Rano deliver a fantastic presentation titled “From GIP Student to Data Specialist.” She captivated the audience with her professional growth, outlining her career readiness and the strong work ethic that has driven her success. It was incredibly inspiring for our current interns to see how her time at WC and the GIS Program paved the way for her next chapter.

Help us give a shoutout to Washington College alum Jacob Vassalotti '20 (pictured front and center!) 🎉

During his time at WC, Jacob double majored in Environmental Science and Political Science—a strong foundation that launched his current role as the GIS Coordinator for the City of College Park.

This past July, Jacob reconnected with our GIS interns and staff to share his professional journey, the biggest takeaways from his time in the field, and his advice for entering the industry. It was a fantastic session filled with real-world perspective, and our team walked away inspired by his path.

Jacob, thank you so much for taking the time to present, share your experiences, and give back to the WC GIS community. We’re so proud to watch your continued success! 🗺️
