Westchester Intermediate School is dedicated to becoming the keystone to developing successful students. As part of the Duneland School Corporation, Westchester Intermediate School serves the towns of Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor, Dune Acres, and portions of unincorporated Porter County, Indiana. The area extends to Lake Michigan and is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes and the National Lakeshore. Duneland School Corporation provides K-12 education to about 5800 students in a 92-square mile area from the townships of Westchester, Jackson, Liberty, and parts of Pine Township. Westchester Intermediate is the second point in a progression of transitions between schools within the corporation. Students coming to Westchester through the Duneland system started by attending one of five K-4 elementary schools that feed into two 5-6 intermediate schools and then into the middle and high schools. Duneland also offers an Alternative Learning Center for high school students at Chesterton High School. Westchester Intermediate employs over 50 full and part time staff members including teachers, instructional and recess aides, cafeteria workers, and office personnel. The average faculty member’s age is 44 with a relative balance in gender. There are 19 full time classroom core teachers, three related arts teachers (art, music, and physical education), and one media specialist. Four special education teachers service our special education population with the support of four paraprofessionals. WIS has two part time band and orchestra teachers, four instructional aides, one RtI (Response to Intervention) aide, and one remediation aide servicing students with ISTEP+ or remediation needs. A full time nurse and part time guidance counselor are also provided.

Westchester's sixth grade orchestra traveled to LaPorte today to attend a LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra concert in person. The students had the opportunity to hear live orchestral music, deepen their appreciation for the arts, and connect to professional musicianship. These types of educational experiences not only encourage creativity and build confidence, but also teach the value of skills like teamwork and perseverance. Music plays an important role in a well-rounded curriculum, and WIS is grateful to be able to offer this type of field trip as an enrichment activity for our students.

It was a joy to hear their progress and see their confidence shine on stage! A special thank-you to Mrs. Malott for her dedication and leadership in guiding these talented students.
