AATSP Exams AATSP Exams (NSE) provides motivational contests and proficiency assessment tools to recognize educational achievements in the studies of Spanish & Portuguese.

AATSP Exams (a.k.a. National Spanish Examinations) is a program of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). The purpose of the AATSP Exams office is to:

🌟 For Silvia, languages were more than a subject. They were a passion. And that passion took her to Salamanca, Spain!

Congratulations to Silvia K. of Pennsylvania, a recipient of the Junior Travel Abroad Scholarship for Summer 2026!
Having studied Spanish since kindergarten, Silvia demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to language learning. In addition to Spanish, she enjoyed studying Latin, Korean, Punjabi, and English, reflecting a deep curiosity about cultures and communication from around the world. She also expressed her creativity through music and writing as a violist and poet.
During the summer, Silvia traveled to Spain to participate in a unique academic and cultural experience through the Cursos Internacionales de la Universidad de Salamanca. Students began their journey with engaging Spanish Language and Culture classes designed to build confidence and real-world communication skills. Beyond the classroom, they participated in enriching cultural activities that brought Spanish traditions to life and offered authentic opportunities to practice the language.

🌟From New Jersey to Salamanca, Valentina turned a lifelong connection to Spanish language and culture into an unforgettable international experience!

Valentina's passion for Spanish extended far beyond the classroom. Having grown up learning the language alongside her Chilean parents, she maintained a strong connection to her Hispanic heritage while also sharing her love of Spanish culture through her involvement in the Spanish Honor Society. During the summer, she traveled to Salamanca, Spain, to participate in an immersive academic and cultural experience through the renowned Cursos Internacionales de la Universidad de Salamanca.

Congratulations to Thomas M. of Ohio, a recipient of the Senior Travel Abroad Scholarship and one of our 2026 Senior Travel Abroad Scholars!
Since beginning Spanish studies in fifth grade, Thomas developed a passion for languages and global learning. In addition to Spanish, he also studied French and Arabic, demonstrating a strong interest in connecting with people and cultures from around the world. His involvement in the Spanish Honor Society, debate team, and environmental organizations reflected both his intellectual curiosity and commitment to making a positive impact in his community.

Welcome Back, Teachers!

We’re excited to announce that our FORMATIVE TEST, the National Spanish Assessment (NSA), is now open as of August 3, 2026, through June 30, 2027!

The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to start using NSA!!! The first attempt of the NSA, intended for DIAGNOSTIC USE, assesses content from the previous year’s instruction, allowing teachers to confirm students’ initial proficiency levels and plan instruction based on their actual needs.

Teachers may also choose to administer the PRE-TEST available at the NSA, as a diagnostic assessment to determine students' readiness for the current level before instruction begins. Teachers have IMMEDIATE ACCESS to NSA results and students' responses.

🎸 From Missouri to Salamanca, Sam struck a new chord in his language-learning journey!

Congratulations to Sam G. of Missouri, a recipient of the Senior Travel Abroad Scholarship and one of our 2026 Senior Travel Abroad Scholars!
This summer, Sam traveled to Salamanca, Spain, for an immersive language and cultural experience through the renowned Cursos Internacionales de la Universidad de Salamanca. With a passion for Spanish and plans to continue studying the language in college, this opportunity allowed Sam to take his learning beyond the classroom and into everyday life.
A talented guitarist, former baseball player, and aspiring physician, Sam balanced a wide range of interests. He planned to attend the University of Missouri to study mathematics before pursuing medical school, and he had already gained valuable experience through four years of work at a veterinary hospital. He also happened to be a devoted cat lover!

A student-athlete involved in gymnastics, dance, and cheerleading, Mia brought energy, determination, and enthusiasm to everything she did. 🎾 Whether on the tennis court, in the classroom, or exploring the outdoors, John David was always looking for new ways to learn and connect with the world. And Salamanca, Spain, became his next great adventure! ✈️

Congratulations to John David K. of Arkansas, a recipient of the Senior Travel Abroad Scholarship and one of our 2026 Senior Travel Abroad Scholars!
After five years of studying Spanish, John David traveled to Salamanca, Spain, for an immersive language and cultural experience through the renowned Cursos Internacionales de la Universidad de Salamanca. His passion for languages was especially unique. While growing up in a Korean-speaking household, he chose to pursue Spanish and became deeply involved in Spanish clubs, community service activities, and language learning opportunities throughout high school.
John David was an active member of his school's tennis team, participated in FBLA, and enjoyed spending time in nature, attending concerts, and watching sunsets with friends. This fall, he planned to attend the University of Arkansas, where he would study accounting, international business, and Spanish.

🌎 For Joanna, a dream of seeing the world began in Salamanca, Spain!

Congratulations to Joanna G. of Texas, a recipient of the Senior Travel Abroad Scholarship and one of our 2026 Senior Travel Abroad Scholars!
As a heritage speaker whose first language is Spanish, Joanna maintained a strong connection to the language while formally studying it since sixth grade. During the summer, she traveled to Salamanca, Spain, through the renowned Cursos Internacionales de la Universidad de Salamanca, where she had the opportunity to deepen her language skills while experiencing Spanish culture firsthand.
When she wasn't studying, Joanna enjoyed dancing, playing the saxophone, working out at the gym, and staying active with a busy schedule. She also loved to travel and had long dreamed of exploring the world, making this opportunity especially meaningful.

Congratulations to Jesús G. of Virginia, a recipient of the Senior Travel Abroad Scholarship and one of our 2026 Senior Travel Abroad Scholars!
Having spoken Spanish at home throughout his life and studied the language formally since sixth grade, Jesús built a strong foundation that made this experience especially meaningful. During the summer, he traveled to Salamanca, Spain, to participate in an immersive language and cultural program through the renowned Cursos Internacionales de la Universidad de Salamanca.
Outside of academics, Jesús enjoyed playing soccer and spending time with family and friends. As he prepared for his next chapter at the University of Virginia, this opportunity offered the perfect chance to strengthen his language skills, broaden his global perspective, and experience Spanish culture firsthand.
