Project Runway: The Quixote Challenge

Don Quixote has inspired beautiful and imaginative fashion designs, particularly for theater and ballet. The novel also inspired Spain’s national costume for the 2015 Miss Universe competition (pictured to the right; for more pictures search Carla Barber + Miss Universe Spain 2015 + Don Quixote).

More recently, the novel has entered the world of contemporary fashion through Panamanian designer Isabelle Fiore’s collection Dulcinea. The inspiration behind the collection is described as follows: “Dulcinea es una cápsula sobre la dulzura que habita en lo cotidiano. Sobre lo que transforma cuando se mira con amor. Como Don Quijote tomó a Aldonza y la nombró Dulcinea, esta colección toma lo simple: la fruta, la piel, los gestos del día, y los vuelve poesía....”

The Activity

1. Search online for Isabelle Fiore’s Dulcinea collection. Use the following search terms: Isabelle Fiore + Dulcinea + Studio Fiore + Panamá.

2. Compare the designs with Fiore’s full description of the collection, as found on the webpage. Do you think the designs reflect the ideas of finding beauty in the everyday and transforming the ordinary into something poetic? Why or why not? What significance do you see in the title Dulcinea, particularly in relation to Fiore’s description of the collection?

3. Create your own fashion collection inspired by Don Quixote. Begin by writing a short statement describing your vision for the collection. Then design one or two pieces through drawing or another artistic medium, or use an AI image-generation tool to bring your ideas to life.

Extension: The Project Runway-style Competition

Students present one or two pieces from their Don Quixote-inspired collections to the class, explaining the vision behind their collection and how their designs connect to the novel.

Alternatively, students can design a Don Quixote-inspired costume to represent Spain at the next Miss Universe competition and explain the choices behind their design

To read or not to read Don Quixote in Spanglish

In 2002, professor and writer Ilan Stavans translated the opening chapter of Don Quixote into Spanglish. His goal was not simply to retell Cervantes's novel, but to challenge readers to think about Spanglish as a language and as a vehicle for literature. He also did this as a way of honoring the hybrid nature of US Spanish.

Despite Stavans's intentions, the work was widely criticized. Language purists objected to the mixing of Spanish and English in what is arguably the most iconic work of Spanish literature. At the same time, many U.S. Spanish speakers and linguists argued that Stavans's version did not reflect the way Spanglish is actually spoken, calling it an artificial or “academic” invention.

The Activity

Search the web for Stavans's written adaptation of the opening chapter of Don Quixote and ask students to read it and decide where they stand in the debate. They should support their position with evidence from the text as well as from other sources. If you have US Latinos in class or in the community, ask them to weigh in on the authenticity of the Spanglish.

Uses and Extensions

1. This activity is particularly well suited for courses in Spanish linguistics and Spanish as a heritage language. Furthermore, because the discussion can be conducted in English, Spanish, or Spanglish, it is accessible to learners across a wide range of proficiency levels.

2. Watch Ilan Stavans's video on Spanglish, produced by the U.S. Embassy in Madrid (Facebook). Identify two or three arguments that you found particularly interesting, and react to them.

3. Search for Ilan Stavans's TED-Ed video, “Why Should You Read Don Quixote?” (Facebook). According to him, what are the enduring themes or lessons of the novel? Which one resonates most with you, and why?

La lectura continuada/The reading marathon

In 2005, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the publication of Don Quixote, the Instituto Cervantes in Manila organized the first marathon reading of the novel in Asia, bringing together more than 500 readers over 51 consecutive hours. The Manila event was part of a tradition dating back to 1997, when the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid began its annual marathon reading of Don Quixote for World Book Day. Since then, the tradition has spread around the world, with readings in Kuwait, Bulgaria, China, Japan, South Korea, Lebanon, Morocco, South Africa, Australia, and throughout the Americas.

The activity

1. Choose one or more chapters of Don Quixote for the class to read aloud together. Divide the selected text(s) into sections and assign each student a portion to read... [read more in the image below]

Extension

Ask students to research World Book Day. When is it celebrated, and why was that date chosen? Identify the two great writers most closely associated with the date (Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare) and briefly explain the connection.

Annotated Image Activity
1. Identify the episode from Don Quixote that is associated with this cartoon and label it with the name by which it is commonly known or one of your own (ACTFL Novice level)
2. Write the English idiomatic expression inspired by this episode from the novel (i.e., tilting at windmills), as well as the original Spanish expression (luchar contra molinos de vientos). (Novice level)
3. Include a quotation from Don Quixote that corresponds to the windmill episode (Intermediate-mid, reading). The complete novel is freely available online at Centro Virtual Cervantes > Clásicos > Don Quijote.
4. Create a thought bubble for Don Quixote or Sancho Panza that captures the humor of the cartoon (Intermediate-high)

Extension
Find artistic or popular depictions of other episodes and annotate them using one or more of the strategies above.

Don Quixote in Our Classrooms: Educators Pay Tribute to Cervantes

Over the centuries, Don Quixote de la Mancha has inspired painters, sculptors, composers, playwrights, filmmakers, and content creators of every imaginable medium. Now, it is our turn.

The AATSP and the Consejería de Educación of the Embassy of Spain in the United States invite teachers of Spanish as a second and heritage language, as well as scholars and content creators, to contribute original classroom activities for our upcoming publication. This volume aims to create the first volume of its kind: a collection of pedagogical activities inspired by Don Quixote and the many ways in which it has shaped culture and inspired its readers across the centuries.

We invite educators from every country and every educational level to join this international tribute to Cervantes, publish their work, and share it with teachers around the world.

To encourage participation and to provide examples of the kinds of activities we have in mind for this volume, six No te lo Pierdas blog entries this fall will feature classroom activities that could become part of this publication. These will be published on our social media, two per week (Tues. and Thursday), Aug. 25th to Sept. 10.

This publication will be released ahead of the Día del Idioma Español, April 23, 2027, and will be widely distributed at the 109th AATSP Annual Conference. Authors will be invited to present their activities at the 109th Conference.

The Coalition of Community-Based Heritage Language Schools is excited to host the 13th Annual Community-Based Heritage Language Schools Conference is on October 2-3, 2026 in Washington, DC! Dr. María Carreira, Executive Director of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), has announced that she will retire from her position effective June 30, 2027.

Carreira assumed the role of Executive Director in July 2023 after a career in higher education. Prior to joining the AATSP, she served for more than three decades as Professor of Spanish Linguistics at California State University, Long Beach, and as Co-Director and Co-founder of the National Heritage Language Resource Center at UCLA. Throughout her career, she has advocated for heritage language education, teacher preparation, and the importance of US Spanish and Latinos to the future of the language profession in the US and the world.

In announcing her decision, Carreira said:

"Serving as Executive Director of the AATSP has been the greatest honor and professional privilege of my life. During these years, I have learned far more than I could ever have imagined: from extraordinary teachers whose passion for their students and for our profession has inspired me every day, from colleagues whose vision and generosity have challenged me to aim higher, and from the many partner associations whose collaboration has broadened our horizons and created new opportunities for our members. Along the way, I have also been blessed with friendships that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

As I look toward retirement from this position, I am excited to return more fully to the work that first called me to this profession: conducting research, writing, and collaborating with teachers to develop new approaches that strengthen the teaching and learning of Spanish and Portuguese. Although I am stepping away from administrative leadership, I look forward to continuing to serve what I consider to be the greatest profession in the world and to remaining an active member of the AATSP community for many years to come."

A Search Committee has been appointed to oversee the recruitment process, with the goal of identifying a successor during the 2026–2027 academic year to assume the position on July 1, 2027. The position announcement and additional information about the search process will be posted soon.
