O'Neal Music Studio Offering piano and voice lessons in Chesterton, IN. I have a BA in music and 36 years experience teaching private music lessons. Classical 2. Jazz/Blues 3. Pop 4.

In private piano lessons I use a combination of graduated method books, finger exercises, keyboard harmony skills, chord knowledge, and supplemental repertoire of varying styles to teach each student a strong foundation in music that we can build on and progress to levels of more difficulty. I strive to teach proper rhythm, counting, how to use a metronome, note names, musical terms, keyboard exer

cises, chords, proper phrasing and interpretation of the music. After a student has reached a certain base level in these skills they can choose a track to focus on particular music styles if desired. The teacher will let the parents and students know when the student is ready for this, but this is generally reached near the end of a Level 2 and beginning of Level 3 in a method book. The student would continue in the method book for more foundational skills, but could choose to add one or two emphasis of: 1. Sacred Music/Hymns/Choruses 4. Pop Music arrangements. More advanced students can choose: 1. Accompanying vocal or choir 2. Playing by chords. If you add an emphasis, there would still be opportunity to play other genres of music. In private vocal lessons I teach a classical approach using vocal exercises and a variety of songs/genres (classical, folk, Broadway, art song, sacred) to teach breathing, vocal technic, projection, diction, rhythm, music literacy, performance skills, and expression. These skills can be transferred to a variety of styles of music which I will use in the lesson. After a student has learned basic vocal skills they can also choose to focus more heavily on a particular genre: 1. Broadway 3. Sacred Art/Sacred Music.

Yesterday I was talking to someone, and she mentioned her grandson auditioning to get into a piano studio. She said to me, you probably don't teach beginners? I told her that I DO! And then our conversation got cut off. But it got me to thinking. I have NEVER required an audition to get into my studio. I think that is based on my philosophy that everyone deserves a chance to learn how to play the piano or sing better. I do require my voice students to be 6th grade and over. I will continue to accept students based on their desire to play and parental support for practicing. I've taught students with learning disabilities and other limitations. It brings me joy to help each student find satisfaction in learning more about music. I have just a few openings now and I will be accepting students for the fall based on availability.

Today was our (end of) "winter" recital! We usually have two recitals a year, one in the winter and one in the spring. This was very special to me today because our last three recitals only had four students, and the one in the spring of 2020 was a zoom recital. Today was a marker to show that we are getting back to normal! An in person piano and voice recital with 14 students was awesome! This was in my living room with just the students. I like to do this at the winter recital so it's a little more relaxed, they can meet each other, and get some experience and practice before the big spring recital.
