Congratulations to Marquette High senior Danielle Perkins, who recently completed the TERA summer research internship offered by Washington University at the Tyson Research Center!

For six weeks during the summer, the program provides teens with field science experiences. TERA teens work as paid members of research teams alongside WashU scientists, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students. A total of seven area high schoolers are participating in the program, which continues through the academic year. Danielle's research findings will be presented at the WashU fall symposium.

TERA builds on knowledge and skills teens gain through the SIFT program, which introduces teens to field research at Shaw Nature Reserve. Danielle participated in the SIFT program during the 2021-22 school year and is serving as a SIFT student leader during the 2022-23 school year. Congratulations to rising Marquette High senior Aarti Palaniappan, who recently completed a summer research internship offered by Washington University through its Young Scientist Program (YSP)! A total of 16 high school seniors from area schools participated in the program and presented their research at the final symposium held July 29.

Since 1991, the YSP Summer Focus program (https://sites.wustl.edu/wustlysp/programs/summer-focus/) has provided highly motivated high school students in the Greater St. Louis area with funded eight-week summer research internships at Washington University. Each Summer Focus Scholar is paired with two scientists - a mentor and a tutor - who work one-on-one with the scholar on a specific project in the laboratory and support the scholar throughout their research experience. Scholars also take two courses on strengthening their science communication skills and preparing to apply to colleges. Washington University graduate students, post-doctoral associates, laboratory staff and principal investigators serve as mentors and tutors.
