We often think we know everything about someone.
In truth, we know very, very little.
So don’t compare. Don’t criticize. Don’t tear someone down just to make yourself feel taller. Don’t judge. Don’t assume. Don’t cast them as the villain when you do not know the full story. And don’t place them on a pedestal either. They are human, just like you.
Maybe they’re extraordinary in some ways, but chances are they carry struggles too. We all do. No matter how polished life may look from the outside, everyone is carrying something.
Don’t withhold compassion when you have no idea what pain, loss, or trauma they’ve lived through. Don’t rush in with, “Well, if it were me...” because it isn’t you. You have not stood in their exact place. Not for one moment have you lived their life as they have.
Don’t celebrate their downfall. Don’t applaud their losses. Don’t let pride, envy, jealousy, or bitterness take root. Don’t let your heart become hardened or unkind.
Instead, choose love. Walk with grace. Believe that most people are doing the best they can with what they have and what they’ve been through. Have boundaries. Use wisdom about who has access to your time, your energy, and your heart. But as much as you can, lay judgment down.
That is the real work: to move through a hard world without letting it make your heart hard too.
