Rye vs. Ryegrass for cool season grazing!

We often discuss or get asked about Rye and Ryegrass for cool season grazing!

One important clarification:
Cereal rye is Secale cereale, while annual ryegrass is Lolium multiflorum. They are completely different species despite the similar names!

So, which one should you plant?

Choose cereal rye if you want:
Earlier winter grazing
Greater cold tolerance
A small grain that establishes well in a prepared seedbed
Flexibility to use the crop for grazing, hay or grain

Choose annual ryegrass if you want:
High-quality spring grazing
A forage that performs well on wetter soils
Extended grazing into March, April and May
A strong forage option for overseeding warm-season pastures

And you don't necessarily have to choose just one! Rye and annual ryegrass can be combined in a cool-season forage system to take advantage of the characteristics of both. Research in the Southeast has evaluated mixtures of cereal rye and annual ryegrass for grazing systems.

A good SC management reminder:
Regardless of which forage you choose, start with a soil test, use quality seed, and manage grazing height carefully. Clemson forage guidance generally recommends beginning grazing small grains around 10–12 inches and removing livestock around 4–5 inches, although exact targets depend on the forage and mixture.

Planning for cool season grazing starts now! Get in your soil samples and make a plan for the fall/winter!

🍂As temperatures begin to cool, South Carolina livestock producers are transitioning from warm-season pastures to fall and winter forage. A little planning now can help extend the grazing season and reduce reliance on hay.

*Equine owners--some cool season annuals, such as clover, can cause issues in horses. Please contact your local L&F agent to discuss species to plant for equine grazing! 🍂
