Meet our IPM Day 🎤 keynote speaker, Amanda Goldsmith!

Amanda is the Director of Philanthropy and External Affairs at the Arch Park Foundation. On November 5, she'll walk us through what it took to reshape Gateway Arch National Park: years of long-range planning, getting stakeholders aligned, and managing risk across a multi-phase public project.

What does it take to run 📣 communications for a volunteer-led chapter?

Our VP of Communications, Jay Bailey, walked us through how he supports PMIMSL behind the scenes.

💬 What has been your focus as VP of Communications?

"My focus has been strengthening how PMIMSL communicates its value to members and the broader project management community. I have also focused on building better systems behind the communication; improving coordination across departments, planning content more strategically, and exploring how technology and AI can help us work more efficiently while maintaining an authentic human voice."

💬 How has your department impacted the chapter?

"Communications connects almost every part of the chapter. Ultimately, our role is to make sure the excellent work happening throughout PMIMSL reaches the people it is intended to serve."

💬 What has been your biggest takeaway or learning in this role?

"My biggest takeaway has been that effective communication begins long before something is published. I have also learned that consistency builds trust."

💬 What have you enjoyed most, or what has been a big win?

"What I have enjoyed most is collaborating with talented volunteers and board members who genuinely care about serving the project management community. A huge win has been moving communications toward a more integrated and strategic approach. Rather than treating the website, email, social media, and event promotion as separate activities, we have worked to make them part of one connected member experience."

💬 What would you tell the next VP of Communications?

"Start by listening to the members, the board, and the volunteers doing the work. Most importantly, remember that behind every email, post, and website visit is a person looking for connection, growth, or an opportunity to contribute."

Is cyber 🔐 security part of your project plan?

For most project teams, it shows up in two different ways.

The first is day-to-day habits. Who has access to the project folder? What happens when someone on your team gets a convincing phishing email? These calls often land on the PM, and they're easier to settle at kickoff than after go-live.

The second is the technical side. Security teams run projects too, like rolling out a new security platform or preparing for a compliance audit. If you've thought about moving into that work, your experience with risk registers and stakeholder management carries over.

Our next VP interview was with the 💰️ VP of Finance, Spring Dwyer.

She explained how much of an impact the health of finances has on the chapter and what she does to build trust with the community:

🔷 What’s been your focus while being the VP of Finance?
“This role primarily operates behind the scenes, unlike others that are more visible and directly involved in organizational decision-making. Finance's core responsibility is ensuring the organization runs smoothly by managing invoice and expense report processing, preparing financial statements, developing budgets, and overseeing tax reporting and compliance.”

🔷 How has your department impacted the chapter?
“Our department provides the financial foundation that keeps the chapter operating. We ensure funds are available, expenses are managed responsibly, and financial processes are in place to support the chapter's programs, events, and long-term success.”

🔷 What’s been your biggest takeaways/ learning in this role?
“This role has reinforced the importance of transparency, accountability, and planning. Good financial management builds trust and gives the organization the confidence to invest in opportunities that create value for its members.”

🔷 What have you enjoyed most or a big win?
“One of my biggest highlights has been meeting new people throughout the St. Louis professional community and building meaningful connections.”

🔷 What would you tell the next Finance VP?
“Remember that your role is to be a good steward of the chapter's finances. Don't be afraid to have honest, direct conversations about the budget. Not everyone has a finance background, so it's important to clearly explain the financial impact of decisions and help ensure the chapter lives within its means. Your role is to protect the organization's long-term financial health while supporting its mission.”
