Blessed to see this little guy blossom! We started when he was four using our summer sessions as a preparation for Kindergarten. And now look at him!
If we remove the hurdles from kids by providing strong literacy foundations EARLY success is in their hands🥰!

Social justice and equity does not begin when you are grown. These lesson and principles need to start as early as possible. Here we paused our reading to discuss what we would do if we were to witness the act of bullying. This task did not take from our academic focus (reading comprehension and writing) but enhanced our lesson. We were able to talk about courage and morality and still address sentence structure and spelling patterns. Proud to share space with brilliant future leaders!

Writing is often associated with war zones for some families 🤯🤯🤯. But it doesn’t have to be. PICK YOUR BATTLES WISELY. Here is nothing but success and amazing writing! We have been working heavily on using the silent “e” so when she used silent “e” for need (nede) and light (lite) I saw this as a huge success. When handling errors like these PRAISE them for acknowledging the long vowel spelling.
You can gently correct them if the correct spelling is needed. But if your task focus was on comprehension of the text that was read (like in our example) leave the errors and address later. Let your child have many successful moments!
We had just completed a challenging book and requested a recall of facts. Praise your child for the awesome job in comprehension, using the long vowel spelling and writing in a complete sentence! Then gently address the needed errors... “Wow I see you are using the silent e but these words are tricky let me show you another way to spell our long vowel words” or “This is a wonderful sentence wow you worked soooo hard. I noticed a couple small words let me help you spell ‘when’/ ‘there’ correctly you were SO close”. Remember you are your child’s first and favorite teacher❤️

Writing lessons in person are taxing but over a computer felt impossible! But we have had many wins since entering the COVID learning world! Letter reversals need explicit instructions and modeling. The usage of arrows, the draw tool and orienting our white boards (physical and my virtual) with a “smiley face” to direct student to left and right has allowed for the BIG smile you see on the first slide❤️.
