🚫 3 Job Search Myths That Slow Students Down
If your job search feels stuck, one of these common myths might be holding you back:
❌ Myth #1: "I need to meet 100% of the qualifications before I apply."
Most employers know strong candidates may not check every box. If you meet many of the key requirements and can demonstrate related skills, don't count yourself out.
❌ Myth #2: "Applying to more jobs is always better."
Sending the same resume to dozens of positions usually leads to fewer interviews. A targeted application with a tailored resume often produces better results than applying everywhere.
❌ Myth #3: "Employers only care about work experience."
Class projects, clinical experiences, internships, research, leadership roles, volunteer work, and student organizations can all demonstrate valuable skills employers want.
✅ Quick Win:
Before your next application, compare your resume to the job posting and update it to highlight the experiences and skills that match the employer's needs.

👀 Wondering what recruiters actually notice when they view your LinkedIn profile?
Most recruiters spend just a few seconds deciding whether to learn more about a candidate. Make those seconds count.
Here are the first things they're likely to see:
🔹 Your photo
A professional, approachable photo helps create a strong first impression.
🔹 Your headline
Don't waste this space with just "Student" or your job title. Highlight your expertise, career interests, or specialty areas.
🔹 Your About section
This is your opportunity to tell your story and explain what makes you unique.
🔹 Your experience and accomplishments
Focus on impact, not just duties. What results did you achieve?
🔹 Relevant skills and certifications
These help recruiters quickly determine whether you're a match for a role.
The good news? Most of these areas can be improved in less than 15 minutes. A few small updates could make a big difference in how employers see you.

Connected with an employer in person or online? A thoughtful follow-up can help turn a quick interaction into a professional connection. 🔗✨
So… how should you follow up?
💼 LinkedIn or Handshake message
Usually the easiest option if that’s where you connected, but you can also look people up here after meeting them at events or online.
📧 Email
Best if the employer shared their contact information during a networking event, career fair, interview, or in their profile/signature. (Check business cards or the organization's web directory.)
📱 Phone call
Only if the employer specifically invited calls.
Keep your message:
✔️ Short
✔️ Professional
✔️ Specific to your conversation
Example 👇
“Thank you for connecting with me. I enjoyed learning more about your organization and appreciate the opportunity to stay connected.”
Following up shows professionalism, communication skills, and genuine interest — and those qualities matter. 🌟

Asking for a professional reference can feel awkward… but it doesn’t have to. 💼✨
Most professors, supervisors, preceptors, and mentors EXPECT students and new professionals to ask for references. The key is asking professionally and giving them enough information to help you well.
A few quick tips 👇
✔️ Ask early — don’t wait until the deadline
✔️ Ask someone who knows your work ethic
✔️ Share your resume and job or program details
✔️ Make it easy for them to say yes
✔️ Always follow up with a thank-you
Simple example:
“Would you feel comfortable serving as a professional reference for me as I apply for nutrition positions in after graduation?”
Professional communication gets easier the more you practice it. 🌟
