We get it, all the talk is of LeBron and the Philadelphia 76ers right now, but the Birds are back baby!!

With Philadelphia Eagles training camp opening this week, it’s time for your annual reminder that the team held their training camp at Widener, on Memorial Field, from 1973-1979, with the likes of Ron Jaworski and Vince Papale training on our campus.

Speaking of Papale, it was Widener and our training camp site that were represented in the 2006 Mark Wahlberg film “Invincible” about the Delco native’s stint with the team.

Widener was recently designated a PA Hunger-Free Campus by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in recognition of our efforts to address hunger and food insecurity amongst students.

The designation is awarded to colleges & universities that meet a number of criteria, including having a method to connect students to food options through on-campus or local food pantries or a food delivery program, and strategies in place to increase awareness of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.

Widener offers campus food pantries and participates in the national Swipe Out Hunger program, which includes a meal-sharing or donation effort.

A new home and a new hope for future health professionals!

One year after the closure of Crozer-Chester Medical Center, the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) and Radiologic Technology (Rad tech) programs are thriving in their new home on our Chester campus.

“Widener was committed to bringing these programs over to campus. The university knew that Crozer was struggling and, with the help of various colleagues, we created a plan in case the worst outcome occurred. These programs are too important for the university, our students and the community at large to let them fall to the wayside.” ~ Sharmane Walker, executive director for the Center for Continuing Studies

DMS occupies three classrooms in Founders Hall, including a scan lab that now has four ultrasound machines, with more on the way. Rad tech, also based in Founders as well as the University Center, is planning a new radiology lab on campus.

While losing Crozer has been a major blow to the community and its medical needs, moving DMS and rad tech to Widener has yielded a few silver linings.

Both programs were welcomed to campus with open arms. Employees are now Widener employees, and students benefit from the perks of being on a college campus, including the resources and support services. And both programs are seeing a growth in student interest and enrollment.

Long-distance running is not for the faint of heart. It demands endurance, self-discipline, and a specific brand of mental toughness that few possess.

Gabby Nye certainly has it.

A two-time Widener grad with a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout, Gabby wrapped up her academic career with a doctorate in physical therapy and her running career with the Pride as possibly the greatest athlete in program history, say her coaches.

Gabby’s accolades are long and impressive and include the NCAA Elite Scholar-Athlete award, a prestigious national recognition “given to those who have not only excelled at a national championship level in their sport but have also achieved the highest academic standards among their peers,” according to the NCAA.

Gabby was the first Widener student-athlete ever to receive the award.

“Athletics are incredibly important to me, but academics are equally, if not more. The award was unexpected,” said Gabby, who credits her coaches, teammates, family, and friends for their unwavering encouragement. “Not one of my accomplishments would be possible without their overwhelming love and support.”

And to think, Gabby didn’t start long-distance running until she arrived at Widener, having spent her high school years at Shippensburg Area Senior High School as a soccer player and short-distance track runner.

Our mascots hit dingers ⚾ 🚀

For some unknown reason Chester and Melrose were not invited to participate in the All-Star Game or Home Run Derby at the Bank this week.

But these Widener All Stars will be watching and cheering on our hometown Philadelphia Phillies!
