Congratulations to Jah-Vanah Francis and Shaina Garcia on presenting at the 2026 SURCA (Summer Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities) Symposium! 🎉
Their project, "Investigating the Effects of Aged Liver Secreted Factors on Healthy Heart Muscle Cells," explores how aging organs affect each other. They built 3D heart tissue from stem cells and exposed young and aged tissue to factors released by young and aged liver cells. Aged heart tissue showed the strongest cell-aging response to aged liver factors, which suggests the liver may play a role in how the heart ages.

🎉 CONGRATULATIONS, RAYANNA🎉

Rayanna Jarrett, a BME sophomore, won Best Poster in the Biochemistry/Molecular Biology/Biomedical Engineering category at the 2026 SURCA Symposium! 🏆

Fat tissue gets stiffer in obesity, and cells can sense that change. Rayanna's project looks at how the stiffness of a cell's surroundings affects where Yes-associated protein (YAP) sits inside fat cells. She built soft gels that mimic lean and obese fat tissue, laying the groundwork for the next phase of this research.

Balancing a sport with an engineering course load takes structure, and the habits built on the field often carry straight into the classroom.

In this highlight, Anthony Giafaglione, a first-year Biomedical Engineering student and right wing back for the Widener men's soccer team, shares how being an athlete shapes his approach to BME coursework, how studying BME changed the way he takes care of his body, and what he'd tell other students trying to balance both.

🌎 International Transfer Student Highlight

Transferring is rarely just about changing schools, and figuring out how your coursework will carry over can be the most complicated part.

In this highlight, Abdullah, a junior Biomedical Engineering student from Pakistan who transferred from Delaware Technical Community College, shares what his move to Widener has been like and what he'd tell anyone making a similar one.

His biggest piece of advice: start researching early, because credits are evaluated differently at every school, and even more so when you're coming from a college outside the U.S.
