EPDACI held its annual student beam contest at Widener University earlier this month! Eight teams representing four colleges participated. This yearβs contest consisted of designing and constructing a uniform depth reinforced concrete beam spanning 3β-0β reinforced with #3 bars and weighing not more than 50 pounds to achieve the highest possible ultimate load to weight ratio! Widener placed third in the event with a load/weight ratio of 153!

Last week, a group of civil engineering and mechanical engineering students and faculty attended the PA Manufacturing Expo in Harrisburg! Partnerships with the PA Manufacturing Innovation project and various industry partners have allowed for expansive research within the School of Engineering!

Senior Project Highlight! A group of CE seniors partnered with Conewago Manufacturing LLC, a leading ready-mix concrete supplier in the mid-Atlantic region to examine three different commercial nanomaterials to determine their optimal dosages in concrete mixes. This allows us to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete, as cement production contributes to about 8% of global carbon emissions!

Senior project highlight! A team of EE students created a mock setup to simulate an in-cabin environment for generating radar setup for real time cabin monitoring! Radar data is collected to include driver drowsiness detection, seat occupancy and much more!
