A little backstory on Terrence — I’ve been coaching him since he was about 13 or 14 years old. Terrence has always passed the eye test for college coaches. I swear, he’s been a big, physical kid since the day I met him.
Over the last few years, Terrence has put in a ton of work both on the mound and at the plate, continuing to develop into a complete baseball player.
About halfway through this summer, I sat down with Terrence and his mom and he told me that he wanted to continue playing college baseball while also pursuing a degree in engineering.
That immediately made his recruiting process a little different.
When a player tells me engineering is a priority, they don’t always realize how much that can narrow down their college options. Only a portion of four-year colleges offer the engineering path they’re looking for, so suddenly the recruiting search becomes much more specific.
But that’s exactly why having a plan matters.
Terrence and I worked together to identify schools that could give him the opportunity to continue playing baseball while also setting himself up academically for life after college. He stayed patient, remained open-minded, and ultimately found a school that fits what he was looking for both academically and athletically.
That’s one of the biggest lessons from Terrence’s recruiting journey: every player’s process is different.
If your heart is set on a specific degree that limits your baseball options, don’t immediately give up on that goal. See the process through, stay open to different opportunities, and understand that the right fit may be out there even if you haven’t found it yet.
