1st Church Preschool

1st Church Preschool 1st Church Preschool "Learning By Experiencing" 1st Church Preschool, Inc. Young children learn by doing.

is a non-sectarian, innovative childcare program that has been providing morning preschool and full day care for the families of Cheshire and surrounding communities since 1995. We are an independent, dedicated, child-centered program trying to meet the many needs of families with young children. We strive for our teachers to be experienced and knowledgeable in the area of early childhood educatio

n and to continue their professional development on an ongoing basis. Our teachers work together as early childhood professionals to create caring, developmentally appropriate learning environments for young children. The work of Piaget, Montessori, Erikson, and other child development theorists, and researchers have demonstrated that learning is a complex process that results from the interaction of children's own thinking, interests and experiences in the external world. Our Philosophy:

We believe knowledge is not something that is given to children as though they were empty vessels to be filled, rather, children acquire knowledge about the physical and social worlds in which they live through playful interaction with objects and people, thus our logo “Learning by Experiencing.” “Children do not need to be forced to learn: they are motivated by their own desire to make sense of their world.” (Developmentally Appropriate Practices, NAEYC). At 1st Church Preschool, teachers are facilitators of play, which is essential to the development and growth of every child. In the context of imaginative play, children are able to set up and resolve social and emotional conflicts, extend their ideas about the world, expand conversational skills and develop thinking skills. The social interactions that evolve from play opportunities lead the child toward greater emotional understanding of his or her self, and of others. We encourage thinking skills by providing a stimulating and supportive environment. We offer a curriculum rich in concrete experiences that expand the child's knowledge and understanding of their world. As significant people impacting a child’s life, we believe it is very important to work in partnership with parents to take advantage of our separate and shared input regarding a child’s experiences.

Welcome to What's Up Wednesday!

Today was all about our enrichment program! Curious Creatures came to visit 1st Church Preschool and we LOVED it! There was a snake, two types of geckos, a chinchilla, a tortoise, a ferret, and a hedgehog. Children got to pet, hold, and learn about all the animals.

What an awesome mid week treat!

It's What's Up Wednesday!

This week is all about Parent Night Preparation! Each year we invite just the adults in to learn more about our classrooms, participate in fun activities, and to see the physical space. But the best part is that all the classrooms prepare special snacks for their families.

In the Red Room they are carefully preparing apple crisp. See the way they peel the apples, cut them, and follow a recipe?

In the Yellow Room they are preparing chocolate chip banana bread. Each child took a turn adding in an ingredient and mixing it up.

The Orange Room is smashing graham crackers to make an apple pie in a cup! And check out their fine motor skills as they worked on putting pegs into pumpkins.

The Blue Room has had a theme of apples and fall all October so far. Therefore, they are making a yummy applesauce treat by cutting up apples. They also made "mini pies" with ripped paper to complement their food activities.

Looking good! And if you're a current family, don't forget Parent Night tomorrow at 7 pm!

It's What's Up Wednesday... a little differently.

Did you know that we are incredibly lucky on rainy and extra snowy, freezing days?! While most preschools are left in their classrooms, 1st Church has the luxury of using the Parish Hall for indoor gross motor activities. Today, many of the classrooms danced with ribbons, enjoyed running games, and played with the parachute. But we also had lots of fun classroom learning happening. Check out the Red Room's firefighter themed classroom. They were putting out burning buildings, taking 911 phone calls, and making the most out of this community helper theme!

Blue Room is still learning about fall and apples and the tractor climber is the clear favorite!
Orange Room is also exploring fall concepts and they did lots of raking in the classroom!
Yellow Room is learning about community helpers and they danced to Tooty Ta in the Parish Hall today!

Thanks for tuning in!

At 1st Church Preschool, we love the community of Cheshire! Did you know that our preschool student rush to the fence any time they hear a community helper vehicle?! Check out this great photo from this week of everyone patiently waiting for the fire truck to drive by!

Did you also know that 1st Church Preschool is featured in the Cheshire Community Guide book for 2025-2026?! Check out this fabulous resource below to see our page and to learn more about our community.

It's What's Up Wednesday! This week it's all about apples, fall, and sunflowers!

In the Red Room, many of the centers still focus on fall concepts such as sweeping leaves and putting together homes for animals. But we are also seeing some interesting investigations in exploring apples (they made a special apple pie snack today!) and sunflowers. Children used the hallway space to create unique sunflower paintings that featured the different parts of the plant.

The Yellow Room is also focusing on sunflowers. Children explored sunflowers through the letter of the week (S is for Sunflower) and in centers. They used tweezers to pick out real sunflower seeds and explored the parts of the plant through felt boards. Children also used the wall space in the room to create life-like representations of the different parts of a sunflower!

The Orange Room is continuing to look at all things apple. At the easel they used real apples to make apple prints (check out the "star" in the middle!), they created apple tree artwork, and they taste tested three types of apples. Using the information from the taste test they made a graph to show which one they liked best.

The Blue Room also began exploring apples this week. They started by using their five senses to figure out apples (how does it feel, what does it smell like, what sound would it make when you eat it?) and then read stories about apple orchards and how apples grow. They are also gearing up to turn the classroom into a "working farm" next week. All art projects featured collaborative painting collages in order to make a corn stalk, the trunk of a tree, and the top of the branches for picking.

Looks like fall is in full effect at 1st Church!

It's What's Up Wednesday! Check out what happening this week:

In the Red Room they launched into an "Apple" theme and all their centers are designed to draw children's interests. The climber area features a tractor/hay ride while Dramatic Play is a bakery. But, the best part is that teachers are facilitating literacy skills and interests in writing. Children created their own menu and signs. Check them out because the skills displayed are amazing!

Yellow Room is moving right into fall and autumn. All week they have been looking at leaves around the school and children even collected some from home to share: featured here at oak and birch leaves! But the foundations of literacy are here too. The Yellow Room focuses on a Letter of the Week and this week it's "F is for Fall".

Orange Room has also taken a fall and apple approach with their classroom. Lots of children were talking about apple picking with their families so the whole classroom transformed into an apple orchard. Children painted apple trees on the easel, sorted leaves by color in science, and made an art project based on the story 10 Apples Up on Top by Dr. Seuss.

Blue Room is wrapping up their "All About Me" theme with emotion-based discussions and science experiments. Children filled out a "How do you feel today?" chart each morning, added eyes and facial features to their self-portraits, and they did yoga every day. However, the big excitement was science; one day featured dancing milk and the next was all about baking soda and vinegar mixing.

The rest of the week looks just as exciting! Way to go everyone!

Did you know 1st Church Preschool operates with the support of a Board of Directors? This group comprised of current and alumni parents, the program director, a church representative, and a teacher representative meet every month to help decide program activities, community outreach, and the inner workings of the school.

Thank you to every member who is currently serving, and all the past members, who have helped make this program so successful! We couldn't do it without you!

It's What's Up Wednesday!

Our learning here at 1st Church occurs in many ways; small groups, whole groups, and during centers. Bottom line: Play is important!

This week the Red Room is continuing their theme of the Ocean. Centers are designed around children's interests and engaging materials. Featured here, children are riding a boat and fishing, a play dough octopus was created, a few children enjoyed a relaxing day at the beach, and of course, there's an ice cream shop for those hot days!

Meanwhile, the Yellow Room has dived right into fall with their theme of Apples. Children read a story that helped them learn that there's a small star inside an apple when you cut it up. Afterwards, they put their learning to the test by making their very own apple books and cutting up apples for a special applesauce snack. Yum!

Both the Orange and Blue Rooms are still learning All About Me. Today, the Orange Room played a name game where they rolled a ball to a peer and said their name. What a great way to get to know one another! Then they also create an eye color graph; each child colored a square that matched their eye color.

Earlier in the week, the Blue Room read the book I Like Me by Nancy Carlson and related parts of the story back to each individual child. Then they ripped up paper which was used for their self-portraits. They looked in the mirror, decided what color paper matched their hair best, and then glued it to a picture of their face.

We love to see all this learning unfolding in unique and meaningful ways!
