Uh oh! You think your college application is complete, but you find out you need to submit a whole other section called "Courses and Grades"... Or even worse: something called the "STARS."

Don't panic! Many colleges prefer standardized transcripts, so they ask students to manually enter them into one of these systems. If you have access to your transcript, you'll just need to have a copy next to you while you input the data.

Neither are difficult to complete! Follow the directions and make sure you fill them out carefully.

Should you submit your SAT or ACT score to a test-optional college? Don’t guess. Look at the data.

One of the best places to start is a college’s testing profile, specifically the middle 50% range of scores for admitted students.

As a general rule, the 75th percentile is the sweet spot.

If your SAT or ACT score is at or above a college’s 75th percentile, submitting it can strengthen your application, assuming the rest of your application supports that decision.

If your score falls below the 75th percentile, the decision becomes more nuanced. Your grades, course rigor, GPA, extracurriculars, and the strength of the rest of your application all matter.

The bottom line? Don’t automatically submit your scores just because you have them. And don’t automatically withhold them just because a college is test-optional.

The biggest mistake students make on their college applications?

They treat them like paperwork at a doctor’s office instead of one of the most important introductions they’ll ever make.

Too many students rush through their applications, provide the bare minimum, skip over opportunities to share meaningful information, and simply try to get to the “Submit” button.

And that’s a missed opportunity.

Every section of the application helps admissions counselors understand who an applicant is, what they value, and whether they’d be a good fit for the campus community.

Admissions counselors aren’t looking for reasons to deny students. They’re looking for reasons to admit them so students should approach their applications like it’s their first interview.

Here’s our mantra: Take your time. Answer every question thoughtfully. Follow the directions. Present the very best version of yourself.

The easiest way to strengthen a college application doesn’t require better grades, higher test scores, or more extracurricular activities.

It simply requires slowing down.

When I help students fix mistakes on their Common App, the problem is almost never that the application is too difficult.

It’s that they rushed, they skimmed the directions, they overlooked important details, they answered questions incompletely, and they made careless mistakes that should have been avoided.

Students who slow down, read directions carefully, and complete each section thoroughly submit applications that are more polished, more complete, and make a stronger first impression.

Remember, admissions counselors aren’t just reviewing your accomplishments. They’re evaluating how you present yourself. A thoughtful, carefully completed application tells them you’re organized, attentive to detail, and taking the process seriously.

So take your time!

Those extra few minutes could be the difference between a good application and a great one.

One thing I NEVER skip in the editing and revision process is reading the essay out loud. Flow matters, and the easiest way to find those hiccups is to "perform" the essay and listen.

Whether the student wants to do this quietly alone in a room or as a fun dramatic reading for their parents or friends, it doesn't really matter, as long as they are listening.

It's super hard to notice flow issues when skimming over your own words, and it can feel natural to focus on each sentence as its own isolated island. Reading out loud will connect the entire essay into one connective story, where each sentence should work with those around it to create a bigger, clearer picture.

The best college essays aren’t about extraordinary experiences. They’re about ordinary experiences told with extraordinary insight.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is believing they need to write about something dramatic, unique, or life-changing to impress an admissions counselor.

In fact, the most compelling essays help admissions counselors understand who an applicant is and what is important to them.

Instead of asking, “What’s the best story I can tell?” students should ask themselves these questions:

1. What matters most to me?
2. What experiences have shaped how I think?
3. What do I value?
4. What would someone understand about me after reading my essay?

The answers to these questions often lead to ideas that can help create really compelling essays.

Admissions counselors aren’t looking for students with the most unbelievable stories. They’re looking for students who can reflect, think deeply, and communicate something meaningful about themselves.

So, instead of spending their time searching for an out-of-this-world topic, students should look inward.

That’s where the “best” essay is waiting.
