Juneteenth, or "June Nineteenth," commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to gain control of the state and free all enslaved people. The troops arrived a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth is the longest-running African American holiday, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It was declared a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

Our country's second independence day is Juneteenth. Despite the fact that it has long been commemorated in the African-American community, most Americans are unaware of this momentous event. Juneteenth's historical legacy demonstrates the importance of never giving up hope in uncertain times.

Summer reading is a great way to pass the time. It's entertaining, portable, can be enjoyed by the entire family and will benefit your child academically.

We're playing Reading Bingo this year for our middle school summer reading program! Over the summer, students can earn raffle tickets by reading books. Bingo cards can be received from your child's teacher, the library or printed from the post below. The reader will receive a raffle ticket for each row completed on the card and will be entered into a prize drawing. To earn a bonus ticket, fill out the entire card.

Every year on the last Monday in May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States. It honors all the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

The flag is traditionally raised to the top of the staff on Memorial Day then solemnly lowered to half-staff, where it remains until noon. The flag is flown at half-staff in honor of the more than one million men and women who have given their lives in service to our country. The flag is then raised to full-staff at noon. Raising the flag at noon means that the country is determined not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for everyone.

This weekend, participate in Memorial Day services in your town. Take a moment to pay respect to the service members who have died while serving in our military.

Get Caught Reading Month, which takes place in May, is all about reading books and promoting the benefits of reading. The Association of American Publishers started Get Caught Reading in 1999. With the constant changes in our modern world, the number of people reading books for pleasure appears to be declining. This may be due to people's obsession with social media, video games and phone apps. As a result, it is more important than ever to emphasize the importance of reading.

Get Caught Reading Month is a wonderful challenge that invites everyone of all ages to get caught reading all month long, wherever they go! Relax and read an article, book or magazine and develop a life-long enjoyment of reading!

May 2nd is International Harry Potter Day! The Harry Potter series is one of the most well-known series in modern pop culture. J.K. Rowling undoubtedly had no idea when she started writing Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone in 1990 that it would become a worldwide hit. More than 30 years later, Harry Potter Day is observed by followers of the franchise. In 2012, David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, designated May 2 to be International Harry Potter Day. On that date the dark wizard Lord Voldemort ultimately met his end in the Battle of Hogwarts. With over 500 million books sold, the series holds the Guinness World Record for the highest-selling series by a single author.

The library has the complete series and today is a good day to read, or re-read, your favorite!

Today is Arbor Day! Every year, it is celebrated on the last Friday in April. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the tree planter’s holiday. Julius Sterling Morton, a Nebraska writer who eventually became the United States Agriculture Secretary under President Grover Cleveland, created the day. Morton was an outspoken supporter of tree planting and had long advocated for a day set aside to plant trees.

Arbor Day is sometimes mistaken with Earth Day, however the two are not the same. Arbor Day is a day dedicated to tree planting, as well as the importance of trees on the environment and communities. Earth Day, on the other hand, is dedicated to the overall health and well-being of the planet.

Need suggestions on how you can celebrate Arbor Day? Visit the library to find a book about trees or check out a field guide to help you identify trees in your yard and neighborhood. It's a good excuse to go outside and celebrate nature!
