TOP FIVE Do’s for an awesome IEP meeting:
DRAFT - Request a draft before the meeting. You can’t provide meaningful input or plan requests if you don’t know what’s on the table.
AGENDA - Ask for the agenda. Why are we meeting? Are we discussing services? Placement? What are we trying to address?
INPUT - Bring a parent input statement. There’s an entire section of the IEP just for your input! Don’t let it be left blank or have the school put words in your mouth. List long- and short-term goals, your concerns, helpful information … anything the team needs to know.
QUESTIONS - Write out your questions on the IEP draft. You won’t have to word them on the fly and you won’t forget anything important.
NOTES - Take your own notes. You’ll have a record of things in your own words, that you understand … without any ‘spin’!
… and next time, the one overriding, don’t-even-think-about-it, all-important, absolute DON’T!

Is your child’s IEP on track? We’ve been back in school long enough that you should be seeing whether it’s working or not. Are they progressing toward goals? Are you getting updates and progress reports?
YOU are the only expert on your child who is part of the IEP Team. You’ve journeyed with them since the first day of preschool. You see them every day and you know your child best.
Make sure your child is getting everything they need, not just what the school offers. Review that IEP and if you’re not sure, ask for other opinions - other parents who are succeeding, trusted former teachers, or an impartial expert.

Autism by the numbers: Experts share reasons for the dramatic surge in diagnoses
