One of the biggest fears parents have about enrolling their children in our schools is that they won’t learn anything or their children will “fall behind” academically.
That couldn’t be further from the truth. It is true that our students don’t learn the way children in traditional school learn. However, that is intentional because we don’t want the same results for our students, so why would we do what they do?
The assumption is often that children need worksheets, homework, testing, and to be constantly directed by adults. How else will they know what to learn? How will parents know they are learning?
We offered MAP testing this year for interested families who were curious about where their children fall academically. The MAP test is a proctored test for reading comprehension and math given to over 10 million students each year globally.
Out of the students who took it (in 4th grade and up), the majority of them scored at or above the level of the average 12th grader. Most of them are elementary and middle school students. Many scored in the top 5% in the world.
That isn’t something we say to brag. It’s something we share because it challenges a deeply held belief about how learning happens.
Our goal has never been to achieve high test scores.
Our goal has been to help children become curious, self-motivated, and responsible for their own education.
When children learn how to learn and love to learn, academic growth naturally follows.
